A 20-year-old YouTuber from Nashville got shot and killed while filming a prank video for his channel.
Timothy Wilks from Nashville, Tennessee, was filming a prank robbery. Wilks and a friend were trying to record people's reactions to being held at knifepoint.
The pair chose the parking lot of an Urban Air store along Old Hickory Boulevard in Hermitage. While Wilks was holding the knife, his friend was filming. Like many others, the 20-year-old was trying to gain popularity on the Internet, but sadly, he lost his life for an unworthy cause.
Prank went wrong
Timothy Wilks was fatally shot by 23-year-old David Starnes Jr. Starnes said he felt threatened and claimed self-defense.
There are still no charges in the ongoing investigation.
Wilks' friend, who was filming the prank, could end up facing jail time. A lawyer spoke to Fox17 stating:
"I'm sure the people involved would like to characterize this as a prank, but it certainly seems to be a prank that went seriously awry."
The two friends would approach a group of people, both of them wielding butcher knives. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department only said that Starnes did not attempt to run away. He told the detectives that he was protecting himself and others from a threat.
Youngsters losing their lives for fame
Many Internet users end their lives prematurely in a search for money, fame, and viral videos. This shooting and killing of a young man is a warning for everyone thinking about becoming an Internet sensation through pranks.
A bystander, Emily Yeager, said:
"This is like a huge kids area, and when we were in there, there were a ton of tiny kids, and it's just like that would not be a great idea. Especially if anyone was walking out here or something like that."
The devastated grandma of the victim simply said that it wasn't worth it. She's right, though it's too late for her grandson.
