After a young couple had public sex on three occasions in June 2022, the court sentenced them for their wanton lack of decency. The court called their conduct "outrageous," although they defended themselves by saying it was nothing more than an "exuberance of youth."

On June 28, 2022, 19-year-old Shameka Julie Leeding was set to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court for an unrelated case. She was supported by her partner, Jake James Quinn.

The couple was caught on CCTV kissing "vigorously" before they started to have sex on the eastern end of the courthouse public waiting area. Shameka was straddling Quinn, and she could be seen moving up and down on his lap.

The couple only stopped having sex when security approached. Shameka got off Quinn's lap, and he tried to cover himself.

However, as soon as the security officer left, Quinn uncovered himself again, and Shameka got on his lap once more and started moving up and down.

Once more, the couple was interrupted when a volunteer court staffer got close, but they resumed as soon as the staff member was away from the area.

Security approached the couple for the third time, and Shameka quickly got up and held up her arms to try to block the guard's view as Quinn covered himself up.

The couple then went away from the waiting area, which was full of members of the public less than 16 feet away from where they were.

The couple could easily be identified through CCTV cameras, and on June 30, they got noticed by the police to appear in court. Once in court, they admitted to being guilty of doing an indecent act in a public place.

Quinn's lawyer argued that his client's actions were not planned and that he was not aware of how inappropriate their actions were. The lawyer also claimed that Quinn was still looking for full-time employment and had two job interviews in the coming week.

The man had just finished his construction traineeship.

Shameka's lawyer, Ryan McCullough, argued that the couple behaved as they did after being overcome by the "exuberance of youth" and had simply committed a "stupid and inappropriate mistake." He also insisted that they had learned their lesson and now understood their behavior was inappropriate.

The magistrate, Clare Kelly, said this was the first time something of the sort had happened at the courthouse. She described the offenses as "outrageous:"

"In a disrespectful manner, you've taken into the public arena a very private act."

In the end, the couple was sentenced to 60 hours of community service each. The convictions were not recorded.
