Yet Another 9/11 Firefighter Dies Of Cancer Hours Before Senator Blocks Vote On Victim Compensation Fund

A retired New York City firefighter, who was part of the rescue and recovery efforts team after the September 11, 2001 terror attack, has just died from a 9/11-related illness.

Kelvin Nolan was 58 years old, and he’s the 199th member of the FDNY to die of an illness induced by working at the Ground Zero site after the 2001 attack.

According to New York Daily News, Nolan died on Tuesday, July 16, and joins an ever-increasing list of FDNY firefighters to die from a Ground Zero-related illness.

After Nolan’s death, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters:

“Kevin is the 199th member of the FDNY to die of World Trade Center-related illness.”

“So many years later, we continue to lose those who displayed such incredible bravery on that terrible day and in the weeks that followed.”

Nolan joined FDNY in 1989 and began his career at Engine 39 on the Upper East Side. He then moved to Engine Company 79 in the Bronx, where his last and fateful assignment befall.

He later retired in March 2007.

The President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA), Gerald Fitzgerald, gave a statement, saying:

“Our condolences go out to his family for the loss of this member. He is another lost victim of 911, and he will be missed.”

The UFA also confirmed Nolan’s death on their Facebook page. The association posted:

“It is with regret we announce the WTC Related Death of Retired Firefighter Kevin J. Nolan Engine Company 79.”

Nolan’s death came just hours before Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky single-handedly blocked a Senate vote to pass 70 years of funding for the 9/11 victims.

Paul cited the nation’s “massive debt” as the reason why any new spending should be offset by other cuts.

But Democrats slammed Paul’s move as “political game playing.”

Fitzgerald said that the blocking of the passage of the bill was infuriating.

He said:

“We let their offices know that we have a wake on Friday and a funeral on Saturday.”

“Others of our members are in hospice care, and still others in a terminal stage of cancer. We deal with this all the time. They are playing politics and playing games. It’s a lot of silliness.”

Nolan is survived by his wife and their three children.

His wake will be held on Friday, July 19, between 4 pm and 8 pm at the Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home on 767 E. Boston Post Road.

And the funeral will take place the following day, July 20, at 10:30 am at the Church of The Resurrection at 910 Boston Post Road.

Our thoughts and hearts are with Nolan’s family and all other FDNY firefighters who’re struggling with 9/11-related illnesses.
