Cats are wonderful. They simply know things and their cleverness never stops amazing me. It's always fun being around a cat. And life surely is a party when you're living with a couple of them.

But this story is not about cats playing the piano and singing happy songs. It's about Nutmeg, who is the oldest cat in the world with its 31 years.

Meet Nutmeg, World's Oldest Cat

Nutmeg is a Tabby cat. And this little tiger recently celebrated his 31st birthday. Yes, the numbers aren't wrong. He's that old.

And his cat age is equivalent to 141 human years in total.

If A Cat Chooses You, It's Just Your Luck!

They say that if a cat comes to your home and decides to stay, it's pure luck.

You, humans, are the chosen one. Thou shall pet me, feed me, play with me, and feed me some more.

How Nutmeg Came Into His Humans' Lives

This is how Nutmeg chose his family. He was a stray kitten. And back in 1990, he just came into Liz and Ian Finley's backyard. He liked what he saw and decided to stay.

When they found him, Nutmeg had an abscess on his neck. So, the visit of the vet was a must in order to keep him healthy.

Nobody Was Certain About His Age When He Started Living With His New Family

Moreover, after the visit, they found out that the cat was at least five years old. Age was just a number to Liz and Ian, and they decided to keep Nutmeg in their lives because they loved the connection they had with him.

The Oldest Cat In The World By Now

With his 31 years, Nutmeg is officially the oldest cat in the world.

That would make him a serious leader in the Guinness Records, but things are not that easy with older stray cats.

Guinness World Record Is Not A Joke

Since they don't know his exact age, things are a bit tricky. Everything needs to be official and put on paper to prove the cat's age for the Guinness Records. The cat needs to have its full documentation, but luckily, Liz and Ian are working on it.

Being Old Is Not Easy At All

Old age is tricky for everyone, even for our beloved animals.

Last year, Nutmeg suffered a serious stroke. But with a little help from his humans, he got out of it. And he's back on all of his fours, growing stronger day by day.

His owners said:

"He is not our family pet, we are his humans and he never lets us forget that. Maybe that is the secret to his long and happy life."

And believe them when they say it - it's the truth.

A Cat Will Always Be A Cat, No Matter What

Cats are born rulers. They will stick to their thing no matter what you do.

Sticks and stones may break your bones, but you could never change a cat's mind, nor its intentions.

If Their Majesty decided that it's time to sleep in your bathtub, then that's it. And there is nothing you could do to change the intentions of your cat.

Liz and Ian shared something similar about Nutmeg:

"He rules the house and he's absolutely gorgeous."

So, yes. Cats are born rulers indeed.

Nutmeg Is A Deary Ball Of Fur

Although Nutmeg is a senior cat, he's not a boring old guy. He's very interactive, playful, and fun.

His owners always say that he is more than a pet for them.

And his habits stayed the same all of his life. Nutmeg goes to Liz and Ian's room every morning and wakes them up at 5 am.

They get up to feed him, and the adventure begins.

People say that a cat usually has 9 lives. But could it be true?
