Whether or not you would like to admit it, one of the most important decisions you will ever make in life is choosing who to marry and spend the rest of your life with.
Did you also know that the person you marry will determine how successful you will be in life?
In a study done at Carnegie Mellon University, getting emotional support from a spouse is more likely to increase your chances of success.
The Research Involved 163 Couples
The observation made was that people who get support from their partners were more likely to succeed in their challenges in life.
It was also discovered that such challenges resulted in greater personal growth and higher levels of happiness.
You don't have to look far to see the magic of this special spousal relationship.
For instance, many of the most popular and influential people in the world have repeatedly admitted how much their spouses helped them get where they are.
Take the U.S. ex-president, Barack Obama, for instance. He readily credits his wife Michele for his incredible success in politics.
Here's what he said to Oprah Winfrey in 2011:
"Obviously, I couldn't have done anything that I've done without Michele… what keeps me sane, what keeps me balanced, what allows me to deal with the pressure. It is this young lady right here... she is just my rock. I count on her in so many ways every single day."
It's not just Obama who has a lot to thank his wife for. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, couldn't say enough of the support he got from his wife Priscilla Chan in a speech at Harvard in 2017.
"Priscilla's the most important person in my life so you can say, it's the most important thing I built in my time here,"
I think you get the idea.
But make no mistakes about it.
It's Not Just Women Who Have To Support Their Spouses
Having a supportive husband is just as advantageous to someone's success.
Take Beyonce, for instance, one of the most successful pop stars of all time. She admitted on Oprah in a 2013 interview that her megastar husband Jay-Z is very supportive of her and that he helps her "on so many levels."
"I would not be the woman I am if I did not go home to that man… It just gives me such a foundation." The multiple award-winning artist explained.
So, it's settled. Support from a spouse can make all the difference in a person's success trajectory.
So, What Kind Of Support Is Needed To Make This Level Of Success Possible?
According to the study, there are three main ingredients to making your spouse achieve this kind of success: expressing enthusiasm, reassuring your partner, and discussing the benefits of trying something new.
Without this support, a spouse can derail your success and your chances of pursuing new and more lucrative opportunities. So, if you are yet to settle, make sure to pick a partner who will help you become more successful. That's priceless.
