Karine de Souza's upbringing was far from ordinary due to her rare skin condition, xeroderma pigmentosum. This condition has compelled her to spend the majority of her life indoors, keeping the curtains drawn to shield herself from direct sunlight. Throughout her journey, Karine has undergone more than 200 surgical procedures to remove skin tumors. As a result of the surgeries to combat melanoma, she had parts of her lower lip and the tip of her nose removed.

Regrettably, Karine has faced unkindness from society. When she does venture outside, she experiences disapproving glances and people distancing themselves from her, displaying disgust. These encounters merely scratch the surface, as she also endures hurtful comments and online hate, adding to her difficulties.

"I am the target of a lot of glances, a lot of people staring at me, some of them distance themselves." she says.

She Feared A Life Without Love

Due to her condition, the Brazilian woman had a fear of never finding love. However, in 2018, her perspective changed when Edmilson reached out to her through social media. He had come across her story and was instantly captivated by her resilience and inner strength. After months of exchanging messages on Facebook, they eventually met in person and soon started dating.

As they started sharing their relationship online, they unfortunately became targets of increased hatred. Doubts were cast regarding the authenticity of their connection. People speculated that it must be a sugar-mamma situation, questioning why a handsome young man would be with someone like Karine. Despite the negativity, the couple chooses not to let it affect them and remains unfazed.

"We have already read many offensive comments calling me a monster, deformed, a zombie," she says. She doesn't let it bother her. "Be happy, smile, because life happens only once."

Following their marriage, the couple has joyfully welcomed their first child into the world. Despite the hurtful comments and hate they endure, as well as the heightened risk of Karine developing cancer, their happiness remains unwavering. They are overjoyed that their baby is healthy and free from any health complications.

What Is Xeroderma Pigmentosum?

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an uncommon genetic disorder that renders individuals highly sensitive to the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. Those with XP experience difficulties in repairing specific types of damage caused by sunlight, resulting in an increased risk of skin cancers and other health complications. The condition arises from mutations in DNA repair genes. Two main forms of XP exist: the more prevalent type affects the cells' capacity to repair damage caused by ultraviolet rays (UV), while a rarer form affects the skin's ability to self-repair after trauma, including burns or cuts (3).

Typically, the initial indication of XP is the appearance of a small skin growth during infancy or early childhood. These tumors can manifest anywhere on the body, with a higher prevalence in sun-exposed regions like the lips, nose, ears, and eyelids. In addition, individuals with XP may experience heightened sensitivity to light, an increased risk of eye-related issues, and a greater likelihood of developing cancer.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is frequently misidentified as other skin disorders, resulting in potential misdiagnosis until the emergence of tumors. These tumors can manifest as small bumps or blisters on the skin, often prone to easy bleeding. While generally painless, these growths can become irritated by friction or contact with clothing or bedding.
