Back in 2012, Aimee Copeland, a 24-year-old graduate student at The University of Georgia, took a much-needed break with her friends to enjoy the last few weeks before graduation. Unknown to Aimee, that fateful moment would have a lasting impact on her life. Ziplining, a thrilling activity that usually provides both excitement and safety, took an unforeseen turn when it was Aimee's turn to give it a try.

Out of the blue, the cable unexpectedly broke, sending her hurtling towards a dangerous drop-off. In a tragic turn of events, she lost her leg in the accident. Aimee was quickly rushed to the hospital, but her challenges were only just beginning. To the dismay of the medical team, they soon discovered that her condition was far more serious than they initially thought.

Aimee's wound had become infected with a dangerous bacteria called Aeromonas hydrophila, which caused a life-threatening condition known as necrotizing fasciitis, commonly referred to as flesh-eating disease. Her battle against this severe infection was a fight for her life.

The Flesh-Eating Bacteria Was Advancing Fast And Immediate Medical Attention Was Required

Through a series of 11 surgeries and grueling rehabilitation, Aimee displayed extraordinary strength and overcame tremendous adversity. However, her journey came at a cost, as she had to undergo amputations of both her hands and legs. Despite these challenges, Aimee gradually adapted to her new reality.

Four years after the accident, a powerful image of Aimee circulated on social media, showcasing her as a true warrior. Fearlessly wearing a bikini on the beach, she proudly displayed her scars and amputated limbs. Accompanying the image was a heartfelt message expressing her self-acceptance and resilience:

Along her journey, Aimee discovered a newfound passion for swimming at the Windy Hill Athletic Club in Marietta, where she crossed paths with her swim coach, Keith Berryhill. Recognizing her natural talent, Berryhill expressed, "When I first met her, I knew she could swim pretty well. She took to it pretty well."

Aimee took part in her very first swimming competition in October, and just two months later, she fearlessly competed in the Paralympic National Championship held in Arizona. Unfazed by the challenges, she has set her sights on several upcoming competitions in the coming months. Aimee shared her amazement, stating, "It was mystifying for me to be naturally talented at this given what my disability is."

The strides and achievements made by Aimee have left her coach, Berryhill, truly amazed. He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I'm still in awe of what she's capable of doing. So, this is a very exciting journey."

In April, Aimee Copeland will reach another significant milestone as she prepares to compete in the World Para Swimming World Series.
