A driver in Detroit took a daring risk when a drawbridge began to rise. He sped jumped his car over the drawbridge. According to a local media report, the jaw-dropping incident occurred around 7 pm.

At the time, an unnamed man was cruising along a bridge that spans the Rogue River.

When he arrived, the bridge had begun rising. Under normal circumstances, this would signal motorists to stop while they wait for the cruise to pass.

One driver, however, had a rather ill-conceived alternative approach and opted to drive towards the growing opening.

While the drawbridge was rising, he accelerated his car to cross the Fort Street bascule bridge. He was driving a Dodge sedan.

And miraculously, he reached the other side unhurt and without plunging into the Rouge River.

According to Detroit News, the bridge operator, Andre Locke, witnessed the whole incident.

Locke said that he lowered the emergency gate as the white Dodge Stratus approached.

He recalled:

"I looked, I said, 'No, he ain't!"

"Over he went, blew out all four of his tires, and then he crashed into the other gate. That's a first for me."

While completing such a jump would be a cause for celebration in the movies, police arrested the man in this instance.

According to multiple media reports, police charged him with malicious destruction of property of more than $1000.

While describing the incident over local media, police referred to the man as The Dukes of Hazzard.

The Dukes of Hazzard TV show, which ran from 1979 until 1985, took place in a fictional Hazzard County, Ga.

The series tells the adventures of two cousins, Luke and Bo Duke. Their vehicle, nicknamed General Lee, was famously seen jumping over a police vehicle in the opening credits.

Locke also likened the Fort Street Bridge's jump to The Blues Brothers' Jake and Elwood Blues.

The two were on 'a mission from God' when they hurdled a Chicago drawbridge in a 1974 Dodge Monaco.

The Detroit jumper, however, didn't claim to be on a similar divine quest.

Police also said they suspect that he was driving under the influence, not from alcohol but from 'whippits.'

What's a whippit?

Well, it's when someone inhales nitrous oxide gas to get high, usually from a whipped-cream can.

While authorities have detained the man at the Detroit Detention Center, they didn't disclose his name.
