In footage that appears to have been recorded using a mobile phone, Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, can be seen reacting after her husband stormed on stage to slap Chris Rock.
The moment Will slapped Rock was seen by millions of people worldwide. The actor's violent reaction came after Rock made a joke about Jada's hair loss.
The cameras naturally focused on Will and Rock, and not many people could see how Jada reacted to the dramatic moment.
Jada was sitting at a table when Smith returned from the stage and went back to his seat. In the meantime, Rock appeared confused and speechless after getting slapped in the face.
The footage only managed to catch Jada's back, but she can be seen leaning forward in laughter as Rock said, "Will Smith just smacked the sh*t out of me."
She could be seen looking at Will as he fumed over Rock's joke. The actor was shouting at Rock, telling him to keep his wife's name out of his "f***ing mouth."
Jada then turned to see Rock's reaction, and she seemed to laugh again and clap as the comedian tried to describe the violent attack as the "greatest night in the history of television."
Nobody knows who shot the video of Jada reacting to the altercation between Will and Rock. Nevertheless, the video has since gone viral, gotten thousands of comments, and received over 73,000 views on Twitter.
Jada has since broken her silence on the incident in an Instagram post. She said that this was a season of healing and that she was ready for it.
Smith eventually expressed regret over what he had done and apologized on Instagram. He declared that violence was "poisonous and destructive" in all its forms and that his behavior during the awards ceremony was unacceptable and inexcusable.
Regarding the joke Rock made, Will said that jokes that come at his expense are part of his job, but the joke about Jada's medical condition was something he could not bear, which is why he had reacted emotionally.
Will wrote on Instagram saying:
"I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."
The joke Rock made about G.I. Jane was in reference to a 1997 film that starred Demi Moore. Moore's character, Jordan O'Neil, had to undergo Seal training, and she had to shave her head as a result.
