Town Gives Pizza Deliveryman A New Car For 30 Years Of Smiling Service: 'It's My Purpose In Life'

Robert Peters or Mr. Smiles has been delivering pizzas in Tipton, Indiana, for over 30 years. If you were ever in this town, there's a big chance you heard about this man.

Peters loves his job, and he's not a typical pizza delivery guy. He's always pleasant, kind and the community loves him.

Speaking about his career, he told CBS On the Road:

"There were people in my family that were like, 'Maybe you should consider something a little more financially stable.' But it's my purpose in life—trying to make people happy. You know, when you're delivering to somebody, you may be the only face they see all day."

Tanner Langley, one of Peters' longtime regular customers, told Good Morning America that seeing Peters and his 28-year-old Oldsmobile meant service with a smile:

"The town of Tipton calls him 'Mr. Smiley.'"

"He's a very kindhearted individual."

Just recently, Peters started having trouble with his Oldsmobile. He mentioned the problem to Langley.

Langley started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to get Peters a new car. The original goal was 12K, but he raised over 18K USD in just over a week.

That's how Langley managed to surprise Peters with a 2017 Chevy Malibu, Also included are taxes, gas money, insurance, and a 2500 dollar tip.

When Peters first heard that his loyal customers got him a car, it felt surreal. He told Good Morning America:

"I just hope that all those who made this happen will be blessed as much as they have blessed me."

"This has really been an awesome experience that I'll remember for the rest of my life."

Langley grew up with pizzas he ordered from Peters. He recalls all the time Peters or Mr. Smiles showed compassion, courtesy, and those moments when he made others feel better.

Langley praised Mr. Smiles, and concluded:

"That's the type of impact he has on people."
