Sheriff Alex Villanueva explained:

"Thankfully, the interior was more or less intact, which gave him the cushion to survive. Otherwise, it would have been a fatal crash."

Woods and two more people were immediately taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The golf champion had serious injuries to both legs and had to go through several surgeries.

The Accident Scene Was Scary

When the local police found Woods, he could not stand but was conscious and able to speak. He was also wearing a seat belt.

Pictures from the crash scene show the car almost totally destroyed. The Sheriff's Deputy added that things could have been much worse, commenting:

"I will say that it's very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive because this is an accident-prone stretch of road. We've seen a number of accidents on this stretch of roadway."

Not His First Car Crash

Woods previously crashed his car around Thanksgiving in 2009, in Florida. The episode also started a scandal that led to the end of his marriage.

In fact, many women at the time revealed they had had affairs with the golf celebrity. This, in turn, ended his relationship with ex-wife Elin Nordegren.

Before the crash, Woods was taking a break from golf tournaments while recovering from a back operation. He lived in Florida and was in Los Angeles to host the Genesis Invitational tournament.
