On Tuesday, golf champion Tiger Woods got seriously injured in a car crash. The accident did not involve other cars.
The golf legend did not lose consciousness and was immediately moved to a hospital. As his legs were seriously hurt, Woods had to go through surgery to limit the damage.
A Terrifying One-Car Crash
The accident happened in Southern California, between Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes. According to the authorities, more accidents happened on the same road in the past.
The Sheriff's Department confirmed that Woods' car was found with "major damage". The accident occurred at 7:12 a.m. PT.
Nothing on the road pointed to a clear cause for the accident. The local officials are therefore, still investigating what happened.
Woods Was Lucky
When they found him, Woods was awake and conscious. His conditions at the time appeared stable.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva explained:
"Thankfully, the interior was more or less intact, which gave him the cushion to survive. Otherwise, it would have been a fatal crash."
Woods and two more people were immediately taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The golf champion had serious injuries to both legs and had to go through several surgeries.
The Accident Scene Was Scary
When the local police found Woods, he could not stand but was conscious and able to speak. He was also wearing a seat belt.
Pictures from the crash scene show the car almost totally destroyed. The Sheriff's Deputy added that things could have been much worse, commenting:
"I will say that it's very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive because this is an accident-prone stretch of road. We've seen a number of accidents on this stretch of roadway."
Not His First Car Crash
Woods previously crashed his car around Thanksgiving in 2009, in Florida. The episode also started a scandal that led to the end of his marriage.
In fact, many women at the time revealed they had had affairs with the golf celebrity. This, in turn, ended his relationship with ex-wife Elin Nordegren.
Before the crash, Woods was taking a break from golf tournaments while recovering from a back operation. He lived in Florida and was in Los Angeles to host the Genesis Invitational tournament.
