This Bar Leaves Notes On The Cars Of Customers Who Choose Not To Drink And Drive

What an amazing deal! A bar is rewarding its customers who decide not to drive after drinking.

During summer and holiday weekends, the number of road accidents caused by drunk drivers is rising.

And advocates for safer driving are finding creative ways to combat drunk driving.

Some drinking establishments reward their patrons for deciding not to drive after you have a few drinks at the bar.

The Union Bar in Gering, Nebraska, is one example.

Many bars and restaurants don't allow their customers to leave cars overnight in the parking. But, The Union Bar takes a different approach. It's giving rewards to its patrons who decide not to drink and drive.

Patron Janelle Martin posted on her Facebook page that she and her husband were surprised when they discovered a note on her husband's truck's windshield when the husband decided to leave the car at The Union Bar overnight.

After spending some time at The Union, Janelle's husband decided to leave his truck at the parking. He called his wife to pick him up.

When the couple went to pick the truck the following morning, they were surprised that his decision earned him a courteous note from the bar owners, Scott and Carla Swanson, along with a free burger and fries.

The Union owners wrote on the letter:

"Dear Union Bar and Grill Park Guest,

Just wanted to thank you for leaving your car parked overnight. I'm not sure if you consumed alcohol at our restaurant or not, but we want to thank you for not drinking and driving.

Bring this letter to the bar and we will give you a hamburger and French fries. Please accept this as a thank you for being responsible. Life is valuable, have a great day."

The Union owners understand that a free burger is just a small reward to repay for helping their community stay safe.

Scott told the World-Herald:

"It's a $7 burger, and if it keeps someone out of jail or keeps someone from killing someone, it's damn well worth it."

Scott revealed that his wife came up with the idea about two years ago, after spotting a similar opinion online.

He also reported eight to 10 vehicles in the parking that morning, belonging to patrons who visited the bar the night before.

The Union is among other establishments that reward customers for not driving after drinking. Other bars include Mack's Tavern in Ohio and Canadian bar Original Joe's Restaurant & Bar.
