The Viral 'Trashtag Challenge' Encourages People To Pick Up Trash Everywhere

Hashtag challenges are as varied as they are weird, but some of them can actually be wonderful.

Viral posts on social media are often meant to amuse and entertain. And honestly, there is nothing wrong with sharing a hysterical meme about something completely frivolous.

But sometimes the right course gets to ride the viral wave of social media and makes our hearts a little bit warmer and happier. Like the latest viral sensation that has taken the internet by storm, the "#Trashtag Challenge."

The challenge involves taking 'before' photos of an area full of trash heaps and after pictures of what they look like cleaned up. You then post the images on social media with the #trashtag.

Byron Román from Phoenix, Arizona, ignited the new trend by calling out bored teenagers on a Facebook post.

Román posted on Facebook:

"Here is a new #challenge for all you bored teens. Take a photo of an area that needs some cleaning or maintenance, then take a photo after you have done something about it, and post it."

It's nice to see a positive social media 'hashtag challenge' for a change.

Speaking about the #trashtag challenge, Román told CBS:

"Due to teens lately making the news about Tide pods, Bird Box, and now the Momo challenge. Maybe I could inspire a few to do something positive."

After Román's post, many people got inspired to participate in the new challenge and shared photos of themselves collecting blights of trash and litter from outdoor spaces.

The #trashtag challenge has been around for several years now. It dates back to a 2015 contest called 'The Trashtag Project' where people could post pictures of themselves cleaning up trash for a chance to win free outdoor gear. The concept was sponsored by an outdoor gear company, UCO (Utility, Comfort, and Originality).
