Losing someone you love is always hard, and it is even more challenging when it is close to a celebration that you once shared.
Prince Philip died on April 9th, aged 99. Her Majesty paid her final respect to her King on April 17th.
Just four days later, the Queen turned 95, but this birthday was different, and it broke a lovely tradition.
The Queen's First Days As A Widow
For the first time in 73 years, Queen Elizabeth II is left without her Consort. The couple married back in 1947, but they met when the Queen was only 13. She fell in love within minutes.
The Royal family shared the Queen's quote from 1997 that perfectly describes her relationship with late Prince Philip:
"He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know."
She went to work soon after her husband's death, but seeing her sitting alone in the church during the funeral, was heartbreaking.
Breaking The Tradition
The royal family is full of traditions: some are spectacular, others are plain weird.
However, when it comes to celebrating birthdays or major holidays with the public, the Royals always look and act the part.
A source from the People magazine said:
"Her family will step up and be by her side, but she will carry on."
"She understands that she has a job to do, and [Philip] would have wanted her to crack on."
However, there was no portrait for the Queen's birthday. It is a tradition for all royals to present new portraits for their birthdays. But not this year.
Queen's second birthday in June is also canceled due to Covid-19 restrictions. This lovely event is known as Trooping The Color, and it gathers all senior royals.
Trooping The Color was canceled last year as well, for the same reason. This year, apart from the restrictions, people weren't able to imagine what it would look like without Prince Philip.
The Queen Was Alone On Her Birthday
Some suggested that Prince Harry would stay with his grandmother.
However, he returned to California a day after his grandfather's funeral.
Many sources claim that though she was, in fact, alone, she will never be lonely.
Her son Prince Andrew gave the Queen two Corgi puppies, and she has a remarkable lady in waiting, so it's not like she didn't have any company.
Yet, Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge had an engagement, while Prince Charles chose to be with his wife, Duchess of Cornwell. The two celebrated 16 years of marriage.
Despite their lives and duties, we are sure they are a phone call away from the matriarch and probably the most powerful woman on the planet.
