While the film's production sets closed down globally with no sign of reopening anytime soon, The Purge franchise fans should be pleased to hear filming of the fifth installment finished before the coronavirus pandemic hit—with rumors stating the film is still set for summer 2020 release.

The Purge has become one of the biggest horror-thriller franchises since it began in 2013.

With the success of the first four previous films—The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, and The First Purge—under franchise creator James DeMonaco, the fifth Purge movie seeks to have a remarkably cool ending for all its viewers.

According to recent reports, The Purge 5, which doesn't yet have an official title, is set to scare up on July 10, 2020.

The previous four films have amassed over $465 million globally on a combined budget of around $35 million, mostly due to the limitless options of the creative premise.

In a society that rids itself of crime due to an annual 12-hour lawless holiday each year, The Purge's previous installments have consistently been able to develop new stories that terrify audiences all over the world.

While details about the upcoming thriller are being kept in the vault, sources report that the film will take out of its usual metropolitan setting but still dealing with class and race issues in the way the previous films have.

Murder and Chaos are—of course—to be expected, but everything else still remains a mystery.

Everardo Gout, who helmed the majority of the Nat Geo series Mars as well as episodes of Luke Cage and The Terror, will direct.

Producers include Jason Blum along with Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.

DeMonaco and Sebastien K. Lemercier are also producing via their Man in a Tree shingle.

It's also worth noting that DeMonaco recently said that the next entry would be the finale, but there's no official confirmation from the studio that the 2020 release will be the last for the franchise.

In fact, given the success of both the movies and TV shows, the trilogy could continue as long as there's a demand for more.

The future of The Purge series may depend on whether DeMonaco and the studio want to continue making the films.

More likely, subsequent movies in the Universe will depend on how the fifth installment performs. If it does as well as its four predecessors, audiences may experience The Purge for many summers to come.
