Is it possible to have your cake and eat it too when it comes to being a career woman and a mother? Plenty of women want it all, but many of those women end up feeling burnt out, bogged down by responsibilities, and overwhelmed. How do we do it then? What’s the secret?
When we are little, we dream about growing up. We think of the cool places we’ll go and the awesome job we’ll have, and it’s so exciting to think about! It’s fun to dream about how cool it must be to be a grownup! That’s because no one told you about the responsibilities that you’ll get to ‘enjoy’ once you get there.
Fast forward a bit, and you graduate university or college and are in this fun, cool place in your life where you’re serious during the day but know how to have fun at night. You meet your future spouse and get to play the ‘naughty librarian’ role and have ALL THE FUN and do all the things, and then suddenly…’ adulting’ begins. The naughty librarian suddenly finds herself with a day job, kids, responsibilities, and all of those things that no one ever told you about.
The most successful women I know are the ones who have found the secret to having a great life: balance. They’re the ones who set aside time for personal development. They plan. They work hard and don’t believe in instant gratification, and they have a healthy lifestyle.
If you’re finding lately that you feel like your inner ‘naughty librarian’ is stuck under a pile of laundry somewhere, then perhaps it’s time to pay attention to your feelings. Find a quiet place where you can eliminate the distractions and figure out where you lack balance in your life.
Make Time For Yourself
It’s vital to set aside time for yourself during the day. Even if it’s sitting quietly with a cup of tea and taking a five-minute break in the morning before you wake the kids up!
Schedule that time into your morning routine so that you start your day on a positive note. Use it to take a few deep breaths and think of all the things you’re grateful for before you start your day. Your family will thank you for it because you’ll be calmer, happier, and better able to handle challenges when they come up!
Successful women educate themselves about money and manage their finances. They have financial goals set and they save for the rainy days as well as the sunny ones.
If you have been feeling bogged down lately and are craving some excitement, then make sure you’re taking the time to put aside money for the fun things you want to do – not just for those ‘uh-oh’ moments!
After all, if you plan to have fun, you’re more likely to actually…have it. Plus, you’ll get the bonus of peace of mind knowing that you’re not charging a credit card when you go on that trip, buy a new outfit, or do those renovations you’ve been planning.
Prioritize Your Life
Have you been running around like a chicken with your head cut off lately? It’s easy to get like that when you’re managing work, kids, sports, and all the other items on your to-do list.
Consider sitting down and planning out your time better. Write out the ‘must-do’ items for your week and plan when you’re going to do them. I bet if you did that, you’d end up getting a lot more done. You should be doing this on a daily, weekly & monthly basis. This will help you live more intentionally, and you’ll be more likely to reach the goals you’ve set for yourself.
When you’re doing that planning, make sure you plan your fun time with your spouse too. Did you know that, according to The Marriage Foundation in the UK, that married couples who went on at least one date night a month were 14% less likely to get divorced? That’s definitely something worth prioritizing!
Lou Holtz put it best when he said that “in this world, you’re either growing, or you’re dying..” so who do you want to be when you grow up? You’re already ‘grown”, sure…but are you where you always dreamed you’d be? If not, then get to work!
Go do some research. Allow yourself the grace and the time to learn something new. Spend time reading a new book. Take up a hobby! Put yourself first and take care of your mind, body, and spirit so that you’re continuing to become that person you always dreamed you’d be. It’s never too late to begin!
You only have one body on this earth, so it’s important to take care of it. According to Dr. Manuela Jannou, a physician in Ontario, Canada, exercise releases endorphins and other feel-good hormones, which help to reduce stress. So even if you did 5 – 10 minutes of running in place after you wake up in the morning, it would be enough to start your day on a positive note!
Schedule Those Date Nights
We can’t possibly end this article without encouraging you to add in a little sexy time with your spouse! We all need those nights out to reconnect, and your inner naughty librarian will thank you for it! You don’t even have to actually go anywhere if you can’t find a sitter.
Teach your kids how to knock first and then hide out in your room and watch a movie! You can always put a lock on your bedroom door, too if knocking doesn’t work. Then grab the toys and have some fun!
When you look at your life you want to see the balance and personal growth. It really is worth it to take time to care for your body, mind and spirit.
If you do this, you’ll be far better able to maintain that inner joy and youthful exuberance throughout your life!
