Just a few miles north of the city of Yichang, you can experience fine-dining on the side of a cliff. Placed in the Happy Valley of Xiling Gorge, the Fangweng hanging restaurant offers a unique view of its natural surroundings to brave travelers.
This fabulous restaurant is surrounded by a scenic stretch of cliffs, caves, and parkland located around the area where the Chang Jiang River flows into the Yangtze. It’s defiantly not something you get to see every day.
The Hanging Restaurant experience
When you are entering the Fangweng restaurant, it doesn’t seem like much. There are grey bricks, and only once you get to the actual eating area will you realize that you’re about to have the meal of a lifetime.
The actual lobby is partly a cave, followed by a 100-feet-long platform road that has been built along the cliffside. Then you get to another cave, which is pretty much your destination.
As you cross the narrow concrete bridge and you get settled, you will apprehend that the whole place is partly set in cliffs, while other parts are hanging a few hundred feet above the ground.
A warm yellow glow gives this space a mysterious vibe, leaving you with a breathtaking view.
The restaurant got its name from Lu You, a poet from the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). It’s quite clear that this place is quite traditional, and so is the menu.
According to legends, Lu You had brewed tea in a cave on the mountainside, so having to share that piece of history while eating authentic Chinese food is nothing short of extraordinary.
The menu is based on freshwater fish, duck, pork, and even turtle soaked in veggies or spiced up with hot peppers and chili powder.
Despite your food preferences, it’s safe to say that this magnetic view is more than enough to come and have a bite. Hanging on the side of a cliff and taking in all the natural beauty should be on every traveler’s bucket list!
