The Rambo movies are still some of the most popular films Sylvester Stallone ever made. However, 1990s Rambo 3 had something special to offer, which is why the film managed to win three Guinness Book of World Records.
The exciting and action-filled story began with First Blood in 1982, followed by Rambo: First Blood Part 2.
In the first film in the series, Rambo is a Vietnam vet with severe PTSD. He only killed one person, and it was purely out of self-defense.
In the second film, he scales up the violence considerably as he goes against Vietnamese and Russian troops in a daring attempt to rescue POWs. He also managed to turn himself into something of a superhero.
In Rambo 3, there was a clear intention to keep the superhero narrative alive. Stallone really bulked up for the role, and he ended up making one of the most expensive films ever, at least by the day's standards.
The third Rambo movie cost an estimated $63 million.
The third installment of Rambo had the character go on a bold rescue mission in Afghanistan, where his friend Col. Trautman was held hostage by Soviet forces. The film was full of action, but it lacked a solid storyline.
The movie got a Guinness Book Of World Records for the most violent film ever. That was because it had at least 108 deaths, 70 explosions, and 221 acts of violence.
With that, the film dethroned 1984's Red Dawn, which had won the award after delivering a record of 134 acts of violence an hour.
Stallone himself did not like the third film and decided there would be no more Rambo films. That changed two decades later when he made Rambo: Last Blood.
Rambo 3 was so violent that Britain's BBFC removed more than a minute from the theatrical version and three minutes from the original VHS version. Still, as violent as the film was, it appears that 2008's Rambo film was not that much different.
