Texas Man Who Shot & Killed Girlfriend's Ex-husband Not Charged, Self-defense Ruled

A man who shot and killed his girlfriend's ex-husband is free. William Kyle Carruth will not face any charges for killing Chad.

The court has determined that he acted out of self-defense.

Chad Read went to William Carruth's property last year, where he got into an argument with his ex-wife, Christina Read.

After the jury thoroughly inspected the evidence for several days, they voted against the charges William was facing.

Following the ruling, Chad Read's widow, Jennifer Read, through her lawyer Tony Buzbee, said in a statement that William would not be charged with any crimes.

Jennifer Read felt that the ruling represented a miscarriage of justice. Her lawyer said the criminal justice system had "utterly failed" her.

Chad Was Arguing With His Ex-Wife Christina About Their Son

Chad was in a fierce discussion about the custody of their son with Christina Read when William decided to insert himself in the debate.

As far as Jennifer's lawyer was concerned, William did not have to do so because he was not part of the argument. Neither did he have to bring a deadly weapon into an unarmed confrontation.

At the time Chad was shot dead, he was unarmed. He was only trying to find out where his son was.

Jennifer and her lawyer are therefore not giving up just yet. They plan on pursuing the matter in a civil court.

The civil suit was on hold as they awaited the criminal case's outcome against William.

On the other hand, William's lawyers claimed that the case had been thoroughly investigated by professionals from the Lubbock Police Department and the Attorney General's Office.

Chad was shot dead on November 5, 2021, and the entire incident was caught on William's security camera. Christina's ex-husband had gone to William's home for a custody exchange.

He had brought his wife Jennifer with him, but she had remained in the car as he went to pick up his son from William's house, where his ex-wife Christina was staying.

He realized that the child was not at home as planned, and he got into an argument with his ex-wife. The fight was caught on camera, and the video was released through Jennifer's lawyer.

In the argument, which took place in the home's front yard, Chad was told by Christina that the boy was not at home but would be brought to him.

Unfortunately, not everything is audible in the video. It seems that the boy was at his maternal grandmother's home. It also appeared that Chad was told by Christina to come and pick him up at 6 in the evening.

Media reports revealed that Chad and Christina shared two sons, who were aged 9 and 14, respectively.

Chad was heard saying at some point:

"I don't care if you wanted to see him or not. I get him at 3:15 p.m. If you want to see him, you see him up until 3:15. You keep trying to keep my son from me."

A Physical Altercation Ended With Chad Getting Shot Twice

William appeared with a rifle during the argument and told Chad to leave the property. The music heard throughout the video is allegedly from Jennifer's car stereo.

At some point, with the chests of the two men touching in the heat of the argument, William said he was glad that the whole incident was on video. Chad was repeatedly daring William to use his gun:

"Do it. You better f*****g use it [expletive]."

At some point, William fired the gun at Chad's feet, and a struggle to take possession of the weapon began. The argument turned into a physical confrontation.

At some point, Chad pushed William away and made him stumble backward.

A woman was also saying, "Call 911." The voice belonged to Jennifer, but it is still unclear who she was addressing.

The video then showed William firing twice at Chad, who dropped to the ground.
