Change is difficult for everybody. I do not dispute this. For an old soul, however, it's even more difficult. I am a woman who's walking through life-powered by an old soul, and I struggle with these things:
Modern beauty standards
Modern beauty standards call for us to be copies of an image that was nipped and tucked into creation. How nonsensical is that? Women come in all shapes and sizes. If the curves of my body and the fullness of my hips bring you no delight, move on.
Reality-TV
There was a time Reality TV helped us break down barriers by exploring worlds we never knew existed. Not anymore. Today, 'actors' just want to extend their 15-seconds of fame. My time is too valuable for the scripted mess that is found in shows like Love Island, Big Brother, or The Real Housewives.
Casual sex
The exchange of intimate energy with the wrong person can lead to a lifetime of misery that I would rather avoid. In my book, there's no such thing as casual sex. I want to get to know you before putting it out. Otherwise, I'm not the one for you.
Needing to be with others 24/7
I am not anti-social. Activity improves the body, solitude improves the mind. The more you get the better off you are. In a world that fights your desire to embrace what makes you unique, the ability to enjoy your own company is a blessing.
Modern song lyrics
Old souls hunger for classic tunes because the lyrics are not only pronounceable, they actually mean something. You can link them to a specific time and place in your life. They've lifted you when you were down and helped you celebrate great moments. They were there when everything and everyone else wasn't. Can you even call what's created today's music?
Snapchat
Where would Snapchat be without sexting? Nowhere. A little mystery goes a long way in my book.
Lack of commitment
Commitment does not scare an old soul, but it sure scares most people today. It's funny though, in a sad way, how people envy it when they see it. They think it's something they can't have. The truth is, they simply are unwilling to work for it.
Playing games in relationships
People are scared of getting hurt, so they choose to play games to protect their hearts. I get it. However, if you're not willing to go all-in you'll never find a good thing. Great love is built, not found.
The next generation
There is an African proverb that says "Each one, teach one." We have a responsibility to those that come after us to help them live their best lives. The world is changing so much I'm not sure where to begin.
What others think of me
"A girl should be two things: who and what she wants," said Coco Chanel. I have taken this to heart. What others think of me is not important nor honestly, is it any of my business. What I think of myself is who I shall become. As Judy Garland said, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself and not a second-rate version of someone else."
