The dynamic detective Sherlock-Watson duo will be back in quirky, mystery-solving action for Sherlock Holmes 3. The movie will hit screens on 22nd December 2021.

The long-awaited 3rd installment of the Sherlock Holmes movie is finally moving forward.

Nearly a decade after the 2011’s Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr. will be back as the Great Detective.

Sherlock Holmes 3 was officially announced in 2018, with a release date set for Christmas Day 2020. However, this date has now been moved to 22nd December 2021.

Alongside Avengers: Endgame star Robert Downey Jr., as Holmes, the British actor Jude Law will also be returning as Doctor Watson.

However, Guy Ritchie, who was the director in Aladdin, King Arthur, and The Man From UNCLE, and also directed the first two Sherlock Holmes franchise films, won’t be helming the next adventure.

Instead, Dexter Fletcher, who made 2019’s hit Elton John musical Rocketman and took over as director on Bohemian Rhapsody, will be directing Sherlock Holmes 3 instead of Ritchie.

Chris Brancato is the writer, while Susan Downey, Joel Silver, and Lionel Wigram will produce.

Jude Law talks new Sherlock

In a recent interview Jude Law revealed a few details about Sherlock Holmes 3.

Law explained:

“We hope to propel the story forward. As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine — since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them — and play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.”

Sherlock Holmes fans are super excited to see the duo come back on the screen to solve the most twisted mysteries as they give the story-line a touch of humor.

The fans well appreciated Downey and Law’s interactions on the screen. They loved the first two installments of the film.

We only hope this upcoming film matches up to fans’ expectations, who’ve been waiting for so long.

The first film of the franchise was released in 2009. It was based on the character from a book written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Directed by Guy Richie and produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey, and Dan Lin, the installment did really well as it grossed over $524 million in the box office.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadow (the second installment) came out in 2011. The movie grossed around $545 million at the box office.

Fans have high expectations with the third film after the first two installments did so well.

A Game of Shadows was commercially successful, despite receiving mixed reviews from the critics.
