After tolerating a lot of abuse from a customer who threatened to slap him and ‘report him to TripAdvisor,’ a steakhouse owner decided to fight back. His unforgivable crime was making the client and his wife wait for 12 minutes before they were seated.
In Dolgellau, Wales, Gatehouse Steakhouse decided to take part in the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. However, the discount plan was still not up to this diner’s liking.
The owner posted the heated conversation on the restaurant’s Facebook page. He shared a thread of the increasingly threatening messages the customer sent him.
The client even promised to ‘f***ing slap’ him if he ever saw him.
The customer started by complaining that he and his wife were made to wait for a table outside for 12 minutes. Then he asks:
“Do you think this is okay? I’m not f***ing happy about this.”
After this complaint, the owner calmly apologized for the long wait.
He also explained how the delays came about: each of the guests was getting an hour and 45 minutes. That made it hard for them to get the patrons to leave in time if they still hadn’t finished their drinks.
Believing his customer was satisfied by the explanation, he went on to ask what they thought about the food and the service.
The customer admitted that the food and service were fine and that the steak was perfect. However, he also added that he was “f***ing pissed” that he and his wife were made to wait.
Once more, the restaurant owner said he was sorry for the delay and explained that his team was trying to take care of everyone. He then thanked him for coming to the restaurant and wished him an enjoyable stay in Wales.
Unfortunately, the angry customer could not calm down, and he was far from being done with him.
After this comment, he accused him of being “cocky” and asked:
“Are you not gonna give me a free meal or some money back for the wait?”
He then layout to layout the apologetic restaurateur’s options: he would either give them a free meal or their money back. If he didn’t take any of these options, he was going to get reported to TripAdvisor.
After this threat, the restaurant owner explained that he could not chase away customers while still enjoying their drinks. The staff had even suggested that they go to a local pub and get a pint as they waited.
He also added:
“Please do your worst. I have zero respect for that site.”
That made the man angrier than ever before, and he started hurling insults calling him a “d***head,” and then claimed that he will slap him if they ever met.
That last threat didn’t worry the restaurateur, who explained:
“I’m at the Gatehouse Steakhouse now should you wish to slap me… hands full making five kilos of coleslaw, but I can take a break.”
After this response, the argumentative customer seemed uninterested in pursuing the restaurateur any further. After a few more expletives, he let the matter slide, as he should have done in the first place.
