Rapper YN Jay, who also goes by the name “Coochie Man,” did a drive-thru toy giveaway at his former high school building a few days before Christmas. He later announced a second giveaway on Facebook.
The event drew quite a crowd, and it rivaled the lines Biden and Obama got during the elections. Hundreds of cars were waiting along Carpenter Road, and they stretched all the way back to Saginaw Street.
The rapper catered for the toy drive all by himself, and he ended up buying more than $10,000 worth of merchandise.
One of the guys working for the rapper, Buddy Gates, said that a number of them went to Walmart to get the items for the kids:
“I had to make multiple trips. Like three trips with five shopping carts each.”
However, the toys had more fans than they anticipated. In fact, it was after the rapper saw the long lines that he decided to send for more toys at Walmart.
Lucho, YN Jay’s cousin who is going by the alias CBMG (Cash Boy Money Game), said they were doing this to make Christmas great for everyone:
“It’s great. Some people can’t have Christmas. We want to make sure everybody do have a good Christmas.”
Other people also helped make the event a success, including DJ Brandan “B-Ray” Jamison from Club 93.7.
Rapper Grew Up Poor
YN Jay was raised in poverty in Flint. He said that the drive was a way for him to support the local community:
“This is my city…You’ve got to give back to your own. It’s something that you’re supposed to do. It’s something that felt good.”
A lot of people were pretty anxious about the giveaway. Edward Fields, a Flint resident, said he had waited for an hour before the giveaway began to get gifts for his grandkids.
After the pandemic, Fields has been left without a job. At the moment, he works at a soup kitchen in the area.
He was certainly thrilled about what he was getting:
“Whatever they give me is better than what I got.”
Skyler Johnson, a mom to a six-year-old and also a college student, claimed that they were just “surviving.” Her daughter loves Barbie dolls:
“My daughter, she loves Barbie dolls. We always just watching YouTube and watching people play with Barbie dolls. And we want to do it someday [like] the YouTubers.”
Thanks to YN Jay, the girl now has a new Barbie doll. She is also a huge fan of the rapper, and says that the other reason she came to meet him was a chance to “twerk.”
The last time Coochie Man made a pop-up celebration in July, violence ensued. However, this time, there was nothing of the sort.
The rapper also revealed that he has been busy working on his next album, “Ninja Warrior” in Miami.
Hate him of love him, Coochie Man certainly made a lot of kids very happy this Christmas with the toy giveaway.
