Luck has been on the side of one punter who won £400k just for predicting that Dustin Poirier would defeat Conor McGregor at UFC 257.

In his long-awaited comeback against his old opponent, Justin Poirier, he suffered a huge KO defeat in the second round.

According to Ben Fawkes of VSiN, one daring man decided to bet $200k (£146k) on Poirier against McGregor, the +270 favorite with William Hill US.

Fractionally, the odds were 27/10, meaning the lucky guy received a $740k (£541k) payout.

McGregor had secured a first-round TKO victory against Poirier four years prior. The underdog upset all the odds, securing the punter an easy $500k

McGregor is known for his mobility, but he didn't expect his American opponent to sabotage it with leg kicks. And they were brutal!

Although Poirier's tactic gave him an advantage against his opponent, McGregor quickly adapted and began catching the kicks and countering.

However, the former champion's movement took a huge hit, eventually allowing Poirier to corner him against the fence.

After that, Poirier was able to release a rain of punches on his opponent, eventually dropping him with a right hook and continuing with ground and pound until the fight was stopped.

Conor had not fought for a year before this fight since beating Donald Cerrone in the first 40 seconds. Even before the Cerrone fight, he had been away from the Octagon since his defeat against Khabib in 2018.

He admitted that his defeat was a result of his long time away from the Octagon.

"If you put in the time in here, you're going to get cozy in here, and I just have to dust it off and come back, and that's what I will do. I need activity, you don't get away with being inactive in this business," he said.

"I'll take my licks. I'm gutted and I put so much work in. Well done Dustin: 1-1, good man."

"It's a tough one to swallow, I put in a lot of work, I'm proud of my work. We'll get to go again and that's it."
