prince harry gets candid about his decision to step down as a senior royal: “i’ve seen behind the curtain”

Prince Harry opened up to Dax Shepard on his podcast on what it means to be a royal and why he left the Royal Family.

The interview gained a lot of press, both positive and negative since we never heard Harry himself speak so candidly.

Here is all you need to know if you didn’t get a chance to listen to the explosive interview.

The great escape

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced to the public that they were leaving the Royal life in January 2020. The couple and their son Archie officially stepped down from Royal duties in March the same year.

During their first interview with Oprah, Meghan did most of the talking and revealed the main reason she wanted out was her mental health.

But she wasn’t the only one – Prince Harry dealt with mental health issues since he was a child, so the decision to leave the Royals was not easy, but it was logical for the couple.

As a part of Mental Health week, Dax Shepard chose one guest whose life was always so fascinating yet full of drama, sadness, and mystery.

Prince Harry started by saying he never really felt like a part of the family and spent too much time feeling helpless.

Harry even compared his life to “the Truman Show” and “living in a zoo.”

As the prince was in his 20s, he started to close in since he never adequately dealt with losing his mother, Lady Diana, when he was only 12 years old.

Harry further said that he felt trapped in a royal cage, adding:

“It’s the job, right? Grin and bear it. Get on with it. I was in my early twenties, and I was thinking I don’t want this job, I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be doing this.”

Not repeating history

Speaking to Dax, Harry once again said that the he had to get out, due to all the press, and the pressure from the inside:

“Look what it did to my mum, how am I ever going to settle down and have a wife and family when I know it’s going to happen again?”

He concluded:

“I’ve seen behind the curtain, I’ve seen the business model and seen how this whole thing works, and I don’t want to be part of this.”

When Harry met Meghan

Harry’s new project, The Me You Can’t See, also deals with mental health. The program he filmed with Oprah for Apple TV will be out soon, but we are not sure Harry would have a chance to break the Royal circle if he hasn’t met Meghan.

Markle encouraged him to get the help he needed:

“Once I started doing therapy, it was like the bubble was burst.”

Harry added:

“I plucked my head out of the sand and gave it a good shake off, and I was like, you’re in this position of privilege, stop complaining and stop thinking you want something different – make this different – because you can’t get out.”

It’s not like Harry and his brother Prince William didn’t get any help after losing their mother. However, it certainly was not enough for then young Harry.

Harry explained to Dax that he understands his privilege, as his trips around the Commonwealth taught him a lot, but it still wasn’t enough:

“How are you going to do these things differently, how are you going to make your mum proud and use this platform to really affect change.”

Harry is speaking, hoping to change the world

Prince Harry, as a proper advocate for mental health awareness, stated that he doesn’t mind talking about his issues:

“That’s why I feel more comfortable now being able to talk about my own struggles because I do it to help other people. I don’t see it as complaining. It’s about sharing your story, knowing how relatable it is.”

He is trying to encourage people to speak up, and that is admirable. Yet, many are wondering why Prince Harry holds so many negative feelings for his dad and grandparents.

Guess that is something we will discover in the upcoming years.

The sad thing remains: Prince William and Prince Harry both lost their mom, but they seem to be losing each other, which is heartbreaking. The only comfort is in knowing that both have loving wives and kids around them.

How do you feel about Prince Harry’s words? Do you think his voice will make a real impact?
