People Are Now Targeting ‘Grease’ As A Sexist Movie

Cancel culture strikes again, and this time the target is iconic movie Grease! What’s wrong with this film? Well, according to some, Sandy says she needs a man, and that’s a reason to create chaos.
Grease is a sexist movie, apparently, and this whole conversation started with Olivia Newton-John, who plays iconic Sandy.
She said:
“It’s a story from the 50s where things were different. Everyone forgets that, in the end, he changes for her, too. There’s nothing deep in there about the #MeToo movement.”
The fact that it’s a movie, not based on real life, and that it was filmed in 1978 is lost on many. Because many people want this movie banned.
Didi Conn, who played Frenchie, agreed with Olivia, but that means nothing. Some simply want to argue even when it’s about a romcom from the 70s.
In defense of Grease
Cheesy cult-classic is famous for music, Olivia Newton-John, and John Travolta, outfits, and that’s pretty much it.
We don’t think that Sandy and Danny lived happily ever after; they were merely hormonal teens. And she didn’t change for him, her change was natural. We all have to grow up at some point.
The fact that Sandy sings that she needs a man is not sexist. We cannot teach our kids that needing someone is necessarily a bad thing. Though we prefer Cry-Baby, which is mocking Grease and similar movies, it’s hard to deny that watching Sandy and the rest of the gang is anything less than adorable.
Besides, by having such strong, negative opinions, people make Grease even more significant. Art is supposed to play with your emotions, positive and all the other ones. Also, the Twitter community agrees that Grease is a sweet, romantic musical, nothing more.
Good Morning Britain saves Grease
After Didi Conn went onto Good Morning Britain and expressed her opinion that the movie is not sexist in its nature, many fans showed support via social media.
The movie ends with the main couple flying in their 50s car, and yet people have to defend them against online attacks for misogyny. Talk about overreacting…
Here are the best pro-Grease tweets:
Oh here we go another middle class millennial saying that Grease is sexist because Sandy says "she needs a man" in the song…you couldn't make it up!! 🤦🏼♀️🤣#gmb

This millenial lady brings out Scream, a slasher, making an interesting comparison:
No, Grease is not sexist, it’s a film. The world has just turned into a blizzard of political correctness. Is Scream offensive? I mean it encourages mask wearing a lot of people don’t like to wear masks 🤦🏼♀️ #GMB

Some were more upset than others:
No no no! Not sexist! Disagree! #Grease #GMB @GMB #GoodMorningBritain pic.twitter.com/kwGZRA3LL0

Then there are those who were over the debate:
The film ‘grease’ is now sexist 🙄🙄

We like this straightforward answer:
Turned @GMB on followed by quickly turning it off! The topic of convo is: “is the film grease sexist” and ppl are actually debating it! Get a life please! So many snowflakes in this world it’s actually embarrassing

Yes, those against the movie always forget this “tiny” piece of the story line:
Not entirely sure how the 'Grease is sexist' debate began but I've always found the transformation to be one of the least sexist things about it. He changes too! She discovers the power in sexuality! Sandy basically has a dom awakening! I never felt like she was undermined here

The defense rests. However, where are those tweets that started this argument in the first place? Oh, here they are!
Grease is a sexist film narrative
Here are some of the best tweets that are supporting the theory that Grease is actually a bad movie. Yet, you could argue similarly about anything in the world. Still, this is a democracy, so let’s hear them out:
I could literally write an essay on how sexist Grease is. But its a product of its age, and it's is a good film. Surely we have bigger things to worry about than that right now.🤦🏻♀️

This Twitter user must be the life of every party:
A breakdown of how Grease is sexist af:
— hillybillyhillbillyhillybill (@HillyandBilly) July 4, 2018
– The drive-in movie scene where Johnny pretty much forces himself on Sandy
– How Sandy is bullied into changing herself for a guy
– "Did she put up a fight?" Like, really?
– Everyone lowkey hates on Rizzo cos she might be pregnant
Of course, there are more, but it’s always the same: that one song line and Sandy’s transformation.
After this useless controversy, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta posted a photo showing them in their old costumes at the Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach. The caption said:
“First time in costume since we made the movie! So excited!!”
We got more chills, and they’re multiplying from one photo than from any indication that Grease is sexist!
