The most famous pay-to-view platform, OnlyFans, will be banning all explicit adult material from October 1.
This shocking statement reads:
"In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines."
"These changes are to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers."
The adult platform has over 130 million subscribers, and it became increasingly popular during the pandemic.
There Will Still Be Nudity On OnlyFans
The London-based company is not giving up nudity, but "any content containing sexually explicit conduct" will be banned.
Instead, OnlyFans is going mainstream to satisfy requests from banks and payment processors.
Becoming a content creator will also be further supervised. Age and identity verification will start this fall.
Despite promising evolving, the platform clearly feels backed into the corner, and despite previous issues, payment processors are not backing down this time.
In December, Visa and Mastercard banned payments to all sites owned by MindGeek, a pornographic giant.
MasterCard also reviewed their policies in April, stating "the banks that connect merchants to our network... to certify that the seller of adult content has effective controls in place to monitor, block and, where necessary, take down all illegal content."
The issue with OnlyFans is that it became a sanctuary for many, as 16,000 creators earn at least $50,000 each year. Many of them are not pleased.
As the company announced, there would be more changes in the upcoming days:
"We will be sharing more details in the coming days and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines."
The company that started in 2016 generated $375 million last year, with over 2 million creators.
However, many started questioning whether all creators are above 18 and how much safety OnlyFans guarantee.
Adult material was banned on Tumblr in 2018, and this company suffered major losses. However, Facebook and Instagram have somewhat different policies, which ban explicit content.
Twitter is the only network without rules regarding nudity.
On OnlyFans, you can also find chefs, fitness enthusiasts, and musicians. However, porn is by far the most popular category on the platform.
The final statement from OnlyFans said:
"OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform. All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators."
Is this a new beginning of the end of the most popular adult-themed platform? Only time will tell.
With content strictly moderated, it will be challenging for many creators not to cross the company's regulations.
