There was a recent update regarding the fatal shooting of the 16-year-old teenage girl who lost her life.
Previous WBNS reports claim that the police were called to home approximately at 4.30 PM on Tuesday. Someone placed a 911 phone call and reported how females were attempting to stab them.
Unfortunately, the dispatcher was unable to get further information before the call was disconnected. So, officers were dispatched to the scene at the 3100 block of Legion Lane.
Cam Footage Materials
The police bodycam footage shows the first officer on the scene. He was confronting a group of people immediately upon exiting his vehicle.
Then, the officer fired four shots at a female who appeared with a knife in her hands. The family has since identified her as the 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant.
According to WBNS, Ma'Khia's family members claimed that she was the person who placed the 911 call asking for help.
A Graphic Video
Columbus Police shared graphic and disturbing bodycam footage showing the fatal shooting. The bodycam footage begins at about the 4:45-minute mark in the video below.
The bodycam footage shows a chaotic scene outside a home. Some females are physically fighting between them.
When Ma'Khia Bryant comes into the frame, it appears like she's trying to push another female. The footage shows an object in her hand that appears to be a knife, which she may have swung at another female.
Then later, the officer shouts commands and then fires four shots at Ma'Khia Bryant within seconds of arrival at the scene. Next, the girl is seen lying on the ground as additional officers tend to her.
As the Associated Press reports, there is a male voice on the video that we can hear. It seems like another officer or a man talks to the officer that shot the bullets.
"You didn't have to shoot her! She's just a kid, man!"
And then, the officer adds:
"She had a knife, she just went at her."
Ma'Khia was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses Sharing Their Point Of View
Hazel Bryant, who told the Columbus Dispatch that she was Ma'Khia's aunt, allegedly claimed that her niece dropped the knife before she was shot multiple times.
The officer who shot Ma'Khia has not been identified but has been placed on administrative leave.
The Mayor's Statement
According to WBNS, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther appeared to support the officer's actions during his statements at Tuesday's news conference while noting that the death was a tragedy.
The Mayor said:
"We know based on this footage the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community."
The 16-year-old girl, Ma'Khia Bryant, was fatally shot less than an hour before a jury announced its verdict in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
Chauvin was found guilty of third-degree murder, second-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, who died in May 2020 after Chauvin knelt on his neck for several minutes.
