New Ariana Grande Songs are Empowering For Women

I was never an Ariana Grande fan. Her voice and her overall appearance were annoying to me. However, something changed. She released her new album, and now I’m hooked. On the album, that is – we’ll see about Ariana Grande.

I was also able to read many reviews of her new songs. And while many people approved of what they heard, there were some that had trouble with the lyrics.

If you listen to “thank you, next”, “7 rings” and “break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored”, you might see why it rubs some people the wrong way. A common complaint was that singing about your riches, listing all of your ex-boyfriends and trying to break up a relationship isn’t classy.

Well, let me tell you – men have been singing about these same things for decades without anyone complaining that they are not classy. In fact, their songs are even worse when it comes to dealing with relationships and women. Sometimes, there is more disrespect than actual artistry in those songs.

Is all of that forgiven because they are men?

Not if you ask me.

And just the same, Ariana Grande doesn’t have to be classy, nor is that the point of her songs. As a matter of fact, her songs are not about bragging about money, shaming old boyfriends or breaking up relationships at all. Whoever says they are have missed the point.

Her new songs are about the empowerment of the female spirit.

Let’s analyze.

For one, “thank you, next” is a song about finding love for yourself and learning from your mistakes to become better. It’s about being single and being happy with that. Is there something wrong with that?

I don’t think so.

You hear it more often now in songs, that women are happy on their own, but we still have a long way to go.

Let’s talk about “7 rings”. This one got a lot of judgment for being all about the money and being braggy. But again, I don’t see it that way.

For one, look at all of the songs men put out. They always mention the amount of money they have and all of the things they have. So, why should a woman be judged for singing about the same?

And of course, it’s not even about bragging or money. It’s about being successful as a woman and being proud of that.

Finally, “break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored” is the most scrutinized song on that album. Again, people listen to lyrics without thinking about what’s behind them. Sure, it does sound a bit arrogant and it can make insecure women in shaky relationships angry – but, it’s actually not about that.

When you pay attention to what’s between the lines, you figure out it’s all about that confidence (which women often have so little of). It’s about feeling good about yourself.

And again, men do it all the time, so why shouldn’t she?

In the end, Ariana Grande’s new songs are fun to listen to and they truly embody the confidence and love for ourselves all of us should have.
