Netflix is about to release a new docuseries next month that looks at the mysterious death of Elisa Lam.

The Unsolved Mystery of Elisa Lam's Death

Lam, 21, was a Canadian tourist who stayed at the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles back in February 2013.

Weeks after her disappearance, her body was found in the hotel's rooftop water tank.

Although it has been seven years, her sudden disappearance and tragic death are still haunting the minds of investigators.

And one very important question still raises itself: what exactly happened to Elisa Lam that day?

Before Lam vanished, she left everything she owned in her hotel room, including her money and ID.

Police released the latest available footage of Lam after the case became more known to the public. It was a very abnormal CCTV clip showing her getting into the elevator, pressing every button, peering out of the elevator, getting in and out of it, and eventually disappearing off camera leaving the doors of the elevator opening and closing.

A maintenance worker found Lam's body floating in a water tank on February 19. Her body then had to be completely drained before removing it.

Berlinger said to Variety:

"As a true-crime documentarian, I was fascinated in 2013 when the elevator video of Elisa Lam went viral and legions of amateur detectives used the internet to try to solve the mystery of what happened to her, a 21-year-old Canadian tourist on her first trip to Los Angeles."

"So, when journalist Josh Dean, who is also a producer on the project, brought us his research into this case, we realised there was as an opportunity to do something different by not just telling the story of Elisa's disappearance, but to create a series that explores a particular location's role in encouraging or abetting crime — or the perception thereof," he continued.

Although the police have officially closed the case, it is still considered to be an unsolved mystery.

"My past projects have leaned into individual crimes and criminals, but I have never explored the role a particular location has played in creating an environment in which multiple crimes seemingly take place over and over again. The fact that Elisa disappeared in a location that has a multi-decade history of crimes is what made her case fascinating to me." Berlinger added.

The Horrible History of The Cecil Hotel

This wasn't the first strange death in the Cecil Hotel. In fact, since its opening in 1927, it has been a hotspot for awful murders, suicides, and strange deaths.

It also seems to attract the worst killers of all; the "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez was once a regular guest.

In fact, Ramirez's nickname, Night Stalker, is mentioned in the latest true crime series by Netflix.

February 10 is the release date of Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, the first season in Netflix's new Crime Scene. It "will explore a particular location and the social forces that contribute to its criminal history, while also looking at specific crimes within that context."

Joe Berlinger is the director and executive producer of the four-part docuseries, Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel.

He is also the one behind similar titles by Netflix. Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and the Paradise Lost trilogy are among these titles.
