Birthmarks are unique marks on our bodies that stay with us throughout our lives. They can sometimes look different from others, but they are special in their own way. This is the story of a little girl named Winry, who was born with a birthmark that made her extra special.
Her mom, Nicole Lucas Hall, is a strong and loving mother who fights every day to make sure her daughter knows how beautiful she is. Winry is now 13 months old and her birthmark covers 25% of her face. When she was born, her parents were worried because they had never seen a birthmark like hers before.
Girl With Unique Birthmark Has Really Strong Support Behind Her
Nicole and her husband were worried when they saw the birthmark on Winry's face. They thought it might be something dangerous, but the doctors assured them that it was just a cosmetic issue. Winry was born with a rare condition called congenital melanocytic nevi, which only affects 1 in 50,000 babies born.
Speaking to Good Morning America, Nicole said, "When they first handed her to me, I thought it was a bruise. It was then quickly apparent to my husband and I that it was not a bruise. And like the name, I thought it looked a lot like a mole."
As a mom in the 21st century, Nicole chose a unique approach to address the situation. She used social media to raise awareness about differences and promote acceptance.
"For a lot of people, this is the first time seeing a birthmark like hers and that's part of why I enjoy sharing. This is a good conversation for parents with their children to see kids have differences, or for those parents who do have a kid that looks like Winry or has any kind of a birthmark to see their child represented."
Winry's Mother Has Fully Utilized Social Media To Help Her Daughter
Despite the possibility of Winry's birthmark increasing the risk of melanoma, her mother has other concerns. "Her health and happiness are our top priority. We have to monitor her with sunscreen. I'm careful with hats and that sort of thing. I know our regular dermatology appointment is probably going to be our best friend growing up."
Speaking about Winry, Nicole mentioned, "She just radiates joy. She's almost always laughing or shrieking. She is just the happiest baby I have ever seen. She's a big talker already. We haven't got a whole lot of words out, but she tells you like it is and she's already getting a little bit of sassiness, so I think we're gonna have a lot on our hands."
Nicole, being a dedicated and caring mother, has gone to great lengths to research and learn about the condition. "We've got to talk to several people from Brazil with birthmarks. One of them has one that is almost identical to Winry and it's been so fun to talk to her because she's almost exactly my age."
Now, let's talk about Asher, Winry's older brother. Even though he's not yet an adult, Asher adores his sister. According to Nicole, Asher doesn't see anything wrong with Winry. To him, her birthmark is just a part of who she is, like having different eye colors. Although he may sometimes feel jealous when Winry gets more attention from their mom, his love and devotion for his sister always prevail.
