Mother-Daughter Duo Just Graduated Medical School At The Same Time

Meet the mother-daughter duo making headlines after graduating med school at the same time!

It's not every day a mother and daughter graduate medical school on the same day.

But against the odds, that's what Dr. Cynthia Kudji Sylvester and her daughter Dr. Jasmine Kudji just did. And even better, the two are going to work in the same hospital system.

Kudji was born in the village of Kenyasi, Ghana, but came to the US when she was two years old. A trip to visit her relatives back in Africa as a child inspired her to become a doctor.

She and her mother had been asked to help with a sick child in the village when no physician was available.

She told UMHS Endeavor:

"We put the child in the water, trying to get the temperature down, and that's pretty much all I remember."

"The last thing I did was ask how the child fared, and she was like 'I don't think the child did very well,' and I just remember being so frustrated that the mom had to come to a complete stranger to get access to health care."

While studying at Tulane University, aged 22, Kudji fell pregnant with Jasmine. So she had to put her dreams on hold.

As per TODAY, she said:

"I needed to bring in an income. And so that's where being a nurse came in."

After receiving an undergraduate degree in biology, Kudji became a registered nurse. And, eventually, a nurse practitioner.

When her daughter went off to college, Kudji decided to follow suit.

She said:

"I was like, you know what, this is the perfect time to pursue my dream of being a physician."

So Kugji enrolled at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences on the eastern Caribbean island. She was 43 at the time.

Her daughter Jasmine, meanwhile, started medical school immediately after her undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University.

Though miles apart, the two supported each other throughout it, making daily Skype calls during their studies. The duo recently received the exciting news that they've earned matching residencies within the LSU Health System.

Jasmine told the NRMP:

"My mother is the most inspiring person in my life. She is one of the only reasons I was able to make it to where I am today."

While her mother added:

"Jasmine has been my rock through this journey."

Kudji and Jasmine's heartwarming story is proof that you're never too old to follow your dreams.
