A mother’s love is powerful enough to overcome self-preservation instincts. Angel Fiorini proved this once again when she ran through smoky, blazing flames to save her daughter’s life from their burning house.
This was a typical life and death situation, and this woman put her life on the line to make sure her kids were safe.
Parents Have To Keep Their Kids Safe
Once you sign up to be a parent, you come to terms with the dangerous situations your kids might end up in. And so, one of the requirements of parenthood is the ability to protect your kids.
The world is full of serious dangers, and most kids wouldn’t make it through without the protection of their parents.
Most parents swear that they will fight to the very end to keep their children safe. But is that what always happens?
The Brave Mother
The 33-year-old was sleeping at home with three of her kids. Renovations were still going on at the home.
And then the house caught fire. She was the only adult in the house, as her boyfriend Aaron was out with friends.
The Struggle To Breath
Fiorini was asleep, but at around midnight, she discovered she had trouble breathing. When she woke up, the house was on fire, and she quickly got up:
“My heart dropped to my stomach, flames were blazing from door to ceiling.”
Her first reaction was to grab 3-year-old Vinnie and 17-month Rosalie in her arms and get them out of the house.
She then came back to get Gianna, 8, after getting her two siblings to safety. But the situation had gotten worse by the time she tried to get back in the house.
Fiorini even doubted if it was possible to get back inside.
She Was Her Daughter’s Only Hope
After getting the two youngest kids to safety, Fiorini knew there was no one else but her to save her daughter. In any case, she was the only person who knew exactly where she was, and time was quickly running out:
“In that moment, the smoke being so thick and so black, and the fire moving as fast as it was, I had no idea how I would get back in there. There was no way that I was going to stand outside my house watching it burn with her inside. There was nobody to call for help, and I knew that I was the only one who knew where she was in the house, and waiting wasn’t an option.”
Mom Walked Right Into The Flames
There was no time to think about her next action. Fiorini quickly went back into the burning house.
It was a brave fight against thick smoke and overbearing heat. Luckily, she reached her daughter’s room and managed to get her out.
By the time the two got to the front door on their way out, they had suffered serious third-degree burns on their bodies. Additionally, melted skin was hanging from their arms and hands.
The Next Battle Awaited At The Hospital
Although Fiorini had managed to save her kids’ lives from fire, she still had to fight against her injuries at the hospital.
Among other issues, she had to deal with pulmonary embolism, deadly infections, and bacterial pneumonia. The daring mom was lucky to get away with her life after this deadly cocktail of health issues.
Fortunately, she pulled through. But the healing process was long and painful.
She also had to undergo skin grafts among other medical procedures.
Fiorini Had 43 Percent Burns
Fiorini and her daughter Gianna were taken to the University of Washington School of Medicine Harborview Medical Centre. The burns she suffered included serious damage to her airways.
She had to be in a ventilator for several days.
Luckily Giana had less severe burns, thanks to her mother’s protection as they were leaving the burning house.
Unfortunately, the fire took everything the family had. But the boyfriend had a surprise for them when they left the hospital: he proposed to Fiorini.
She said yes, and she admitted that it was a very important day for her.
The couple had been together for 15 years, and Aaron was the father of their three children.
The fire probably made the man realize how precious life is, which is why he decided to propose. Fiorini was thrilled:
“It was such a wonderful surprise. After everything that we had been through, I think it had set Aaron thinking that we should get married at last.”
They Also Got Some Help
Their community was sympathetic to them and tried to help them get their lives back on track. With their help, the family now has a car, a mobile home, and furniture.
That should be a pretty good starting point after what they have been through. The most important thing is that the whole family managed to survive a fire that had the potential to do a lot more damage.
