Hilarious footage of a mom's performance during her daughter's school sports day has surfaced.

The 36-year-old mom from Basildon in Essex, Katie Hannaford, was encouraged to participate in the run by her eight-year-old daughter.

Her face-planting race was witnessed by fellow parents, students, and teachers participating in the event.

The race started pretty well when the unexpected happened a few minutes later, and she lost her footing.

She tripped and fell headfirst into the field with her bum in the air, as you can see in the video.

Her light blue dress went over her head, which resulted in everyone seeing her almost bare behind.

The video showed kids turning around to avoid the spectacle as soon as they realized what had happened.

The homeware owner commented after the event;

"I'm not sporty at all, but [my daughter] kept begging me," she said. "In the end, I agreed to the race – I knew I'd come last."

Hannaford continued:

"I just tripped over my feet – I think my body was moving too fast for my legs! I'm so clumsy, I'm always falling over."

"I was humiliated at the time, but it is what it is! I flashed my underwear which is obviously embarrassing, but you just have to own it."

"Looking back, it's hilarious – definitely the funniest thing I've ever done in my life!"

"If you can't laugh at yourself, then what's life about ay! Sorry kiddos and anyone else watching!"

Though initially mortified, Katie saw the funny side.

In fact, she thought it was so hilarious that she posted the video on her Facebook page, saying:

"If you can't laugh at yourself, then what's life about, ay! Sorry kiddos and anyone else watching!"

The post went viral in a short time, and several people dropped various comments on the hilarious video.

"I think this is a 'crack'ing good effort posting this and a great view for the kids," stated one, while another said, "Omg, Katie, more I watch it more I laugh."

A third commented: "I'm laughing more this morning than I was last night."

It turned out fine, and everyone had a good laugh.
