Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Called For Arrest Of Officer Who Knelt On George Floyd’s Neck

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called for Derek Chauvin’s arrest, the police officer who knelt on George Floyd’s neck.

Cops arrested Floyd, an African-American man, on May 25, for reportedly using a counterfeit $20 note in a store.

While detaining him, one of the officers knelt on the man’s neck for about eight minutes.

The unarmed man lost consciousness and later died.

Following the tragic ordeal, the Minneapolis mayor pressed for the arrest of the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck.

Initially, the police department had fired Chauvin from the force and four other officers involved in the altercation.

However, the department hadn’t charged the ex-officers of any crime.

On May 27, speaking at a press conference, the city’s mayor spoke about arresting Chauvin.

Jacob Frey:

“Why is the man who killed George Floyd not in jail? If you had done it or I had done it, we would be behind bars right now. And I cannot come up with a good answer to that question.”

“I’m calling on the Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman to act on the evidence before him. I’m calling on him to charge the arresting officer in this case.”

“We cannot turn a blind eye. It is on us as leaders to see this as it is and call it what it is.”

Frey wasn’t alone in calling for Chauvin’s arrest.

George’s sister Bridgett Floyd told NBC’s Today show that her family wanted all four officers arrested and charged with murder.

Chauvin had been investigated for the shootings of three people while on duty in the past. And one of which resulted in the victim dying.

According to the Star Tribune, the 44-year-old was one of six officers linked to the 2006 death of Wayne Reyes.

The officers fatally shot Reyes after allegedly pulling a gun on the cops.

In 2008, the criminal apprehension agency investigated Chauvin for involvement in Ira Toles’ shooting during a domestic assault response.

At the time, Chauvin shot Toles in the abdomen after he went for one of the officer’s guns.

As reported by MailOnline, Chauvin was among the officers who shot 23-year-old Leroy Martinez.

The officer injured Martinez during a police chase back in 2011.

Floyd’s tragic death has sparked protests in Minneapolis and many cities across the country.

As of June 1, over 75 cities in the US have seen protests over the horrifying Floyd death footage.
