A 22-year-old Ukrainian refugee has caused a British father of two to ditch his partner to be with her. The young woman went to live with the family following the war in Ukraine.
However, it did not take long for the two to get incredibly close, which was a concern to the man's partner. They had been together for a decade.
The two lovebirds claim that they are experiencing their own "love story," but obviously without regard for the pain and damage, their romance is causing.
The 29-year-old man, Tony Garnett, and his 28-year-old partner, Lorna, decided to host Sofiia Karkadym at the beginning of May. Barely two weeks later, Sofiia and Tony had decided to be together, which destroyed a seemingly happy relationship between the man and his long-time partner.
Tony works as a security guard, and he lives in Bradford, West Yorkshire. He has declared his undying love for his new lover and claimed that he would like to spend the rest of his life with her.
Sofiia escaped from Lviv in western Ukraine. Like Tony, she was drawn to him as soon as they saw each other.
She "fancied" him as soon as they met, and now, she claims they are living their own "love story."
The two know that their relationship will cause Lorna some pain. Nevertheless, Tony has claimed that he found out he had a connection with Sofiia, unlike anything he has ever had before.
Both of them insist that what they are doing is "right."
Tony and his family had decided to host Sofiia in a bid to help out during the Ukrainian refugee crisis after Russian forces invaded their country. He said he "wanted to do the right thing" when Sofiia reached out to him when he offered to take in a refugee through a Facebook page.
Sofiia works as an IT manager, and she flew to Manchester on May 4. She had to wait for weeks in Berlin, Germany before her UK visa could be approved.
According to Tony, he and Sofiia had a quick but deep connection. His two daughters, aged 6 and 3 respectively, also liked her. His partner of 10 years did not find her as likable as the rest of the family did.
Tony can speak Slovakian, and he was able to talk to Sofiia although she spoke Ukrainian. Speakers of the two languages can understand each other.
Lorna does not understand either language, and she was left at a loss to understand what the two were discussing. Tony admitted that he was "getting on brilliantly" with the Ukrainian refugee, but at the time, there was nothing more going on between them.
However, he understood why his partner Lorna felt jealous and resentful towards Sofiia.
Over time, Sofiia started to join Tony as he went to the gym. It was also clear that they were growing physically closer to each other.
Tony also realized that he and Sofiia were getting closer as they would keep finding excuses to touch and brush against each other. Although they were flirting, he says that, at the time, there was nothing more going on.
The "innocent" behavior was starting to cause conflicts, which he said he understood. When he got home, Sofiia would make him a meal he could try.
Tony said that Lorna got "very jealous" as he got closer to Sofiia. She started asking why the young woman was staying close to him all the time.
Things were getting very tense in the house, and Sofiia started to tell Tony that she did not know if she could continue staying in the house under the circumstances.
It turns out that Lorna was not particularly happy about the family hosting a refugee in the first place since that meant their two daughters had to use a single room.
Eventually, the two women in the house got into an explosive argument, which became a defining point in Tony and Lorna's relationship. After the conflict, Sofiia was left crying, and she also felt that she could not live in the house with the family anymore.
Rather than siding with his long-term partner Lorna, Tony told her, "If she's going, I'm going." He made the declaration after something inside him "clicked."
After the statement, the two lovers packed up and moved in with his parents. They are currently looking for a home to move into.
So, in just ten days, a 10-year relationship ended. However, Tony does not think Lorna is to blame.
He also admits to feeling bad about what happened:
"I am so sorry for what Lorna is going through, this was not her fault, and it was not about anything she did wrong."
He has insisted that they never planned what happened and had no intention of hurting anyone.
According to a friend of Lorna, the woman is "absolutely devastated." This is because she was with Tony for ten years before their family was torn apart in the space of just ten days.
