Mamma Mia! Creator Says Third Movie Is Coming

The first Mamma Mia! movie hit cinemas in 2008, followed by Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in 2018.

In a recent interview with The Daily Mail, Mamma Mia! producer and co-creator, Judy Craymer, revealed that the third movie in the series was in the works.

A Quick Recap Of The Mamma Mia! Movies

Mamma Mia! is a 2008 musical that features famous pop music group ABBA’s songs. It tells the story of bride-to-be Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her mother Donna (Meryl Streep). Before her wedding day, Sophie invites three of her mother’s past lovers (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård), hoping to find her real father.

The first film and the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again were both box office hits. In fact, the latter made nearly $400 million in sales worldwide.

Not only that, but she also considered turning Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again into a stage musical. However, she left us all wondering when all she said was, “it’s a thought.”

Mamma Mia! a Trilogy?

Craymer had intended to produce a third movie during the lockdown. However, although she managed to avoid catching the virus, she said that it was still hard for her to concentrate on her work—like most people—during the crisis.

While the movie had already been approved by the studio, Craymer mentioned that the pandemic had made it difficult to get much done in that sense.

“I was meant to have been getting on with that [a third movie], in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog.

I think one day there will be another film because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see,” she said to The Daily Mail.

In addition, she said, “I know Universal would like me to do it,” implying that she had received the green light from Universal studios.

As the films featured some of ABBA’s greatest hits, Craymer mentioned that she wants to use Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus’s new songs in the next Mamma Mia! film, which were written for a virtual concert and are expected to be released in September 2020.

While the third Mamma Mia! has not been announced officially yet, Craymer hinted that it might include new music created by ABBA.

The first two films feature some of ABBA’s greatest hits (of course). And Craymer mentioned wanting to use Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus’s new songs in the next film.

And for the crazed fans of the musical series, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again comes out on Netflix on June 26.

Not only does that mean that you can watch your favorite movies again, but it also means you’ve got loads of time to catch up on the story until the third movie’s official announcement.
