The upcoming Season 5 of Lucifer may be the finale, but fans of this Vertigo-inspired show are about to experience more of the titular devil than they previously thought.
After initially being reviewed as a 10-episode final season by Netflix, the Lucifer series has been significantly expanded to include six extra episodes, the streaming service announced.
Netflix shared the news on Friday, July 26, revealing that they'll be giving the series additional episodes to tie up Lucifer's devilish doings once and for all.
Taking to Tweeter, via their See What's Next account, the streaming company wrote:
"Lucifer Season 5 just got a HELL of a lot better — and bigger! We've added six more hours, for a grand total of 16 episodes!"
While these 16 episodes may seem like a lot comparing to the 10 in Season 4, and the 10 initially scheduled for Season 5, it's nothing compared to the first three Lucifer installments that premiered on FOX.
Season 1 of this devilish series aired with 13 chapters while the second season increased its count to 18 episodes. And the third season comprised of a whopping 26 installments.
The show was resurrected by Netflix just a month after FOX canceled it in 2018. While the release date for Season 5 hasn't been revealed yet, the show is more likely to air in 2020.
The fourth season of Lucifer was released in May 2019.
Speaking to TV Line about the show, showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich said:
"We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms."
"Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!"
Joe Henderson added:
"The fan support is super-important, and in particular [the first] month is going to be crucial towards whether or not we get a Season 5 because they [at Netflix] are paying attention."
"So far, the fan support has been amazing — everything you could ask for."
In an interview with EW, Modrovich said that Season 5 will be a "brilliant" show.
He said:
"We really try to ping it in a completely different direction."
"If everybody is speculating on one thing, we just try to think as batshit as we can, as outside of the box as possible, so that people don't get bored, so we don't get bored."
"We do have an idea. It's an idea that when it came up in the room, we went, 'Oh god, that's crazy.' Then the more we talked about it, the more we went, 'brilliant.'"
