little girl is best friends with a huge python and the father couldn’t be happier

Meet a 7-year-old girl who is besties with a 16ft python—they even have tea parties together.

For most of us, just a sight of a python would be enough to scare us to death. But one 7-year-old is showing the world that we shouldn’t fear snakes.

Emi, from Surrey, England, has been playing alongside her pet snake Cher since she was two years old.

At the time, her reticulated python pet was tiny, and Emi could carry her around her neck.

But now, the Lavender Motley Sunfire Tiger reticulated python is so big Emi can’t even lift her.

The young girl can often be seen on social media cuddling and playing with the snakes—totally unruffled by their size or danger.

Emi’s dad, Ed Taoka, a massage therapist, explains that he would never leave his child unsupervised with the snake.

However, he added that snakes are nicer than people imagine them to be.

Speaking of her daughter’s friendship with the python, Ed told The Dodo:

“The relationship between my daughter and the snakes has become stronger over time.”

“They’re just very used to each other’s company.”

He added:

“When I introduced Emi to Cher, Emi was about 2-years-old, and Cher was quite a tiny snake.”

“My daughter would just hold Cher in her hand at the time, but now Cher’s so big she couldn’t even lift her up.”

Of course, the dad had to let these two build trust before they became so close.

And for the most part, Ed had to teach the snake how to socialize with humans—especially little ones—properly.

He explained:

“I spent every day, multiple times a day, with Cher, just getting her used to human interaction.”

“On the other front, I needed to make sure my daughter genuinely knew how to be gentle.”

“As soon as she understood what she needs to do, no grabbing, no poking, just being gentle and respectful. That’s all I needed from her… and she proved that to me.”

And, no, the snake won’t eat Emi any more than a puppy would bite your child.

So, chill.

The two watch TV, play and take naps together, Emi’s dad explained.

When asked if he feels the snake could pose a potential threat to her daughter, Ed said:

“They could stop her breathing if they managed to get around her neck. But I don’t think they could eat my daughter at this size.”

When you think about it, this young girl is pretty lucky to have a python pet. She won’t grow up with the fear of snakes that many of us have.
