In 2018, Mitchell received a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease.

As his condition advanced, Mitchell transitioned to using a motorized wheelchair. In Star Trek: Discovery season 3, he portrayed Aurellio, a character whose reliance on a wheelchair-like device mirrored Mitchell's own battle with ALS.

"For five and a half years Ken faced a series of awful challenges from ALS. And in truest Ken fashion, he managed to rise above each one with grace and commitment to living a full and joyous life in each moment," his family's statement concludes.
