The controversial rapper and Yeezy designer has been teasing his presidential candidacy in numerous interviews for a while now.
But until recently, there was some confusion over whether the Jesus is King artist will run for president in 2020.
In a tweet West shared early this month, he wrote:
“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision, and building our future. I am running for president of the United States.”
West then ended the post with the hashtag #2020VISION.
His Twitter post has so far garnered millions of likes. And his announcement was met with memes of disbelief and endorsement messages.
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, later followed up the rapper’s tweet, announcing his full support.
“You have my full support.”
A 2020 presidential run would be virtually impossible for West.
This is because a late July announcement means he has missed every state filing deadline for the two major parties and nearly all state primaries.
While he could register as an independent candidate in some states, he has also missed several state filing deadlines.
West has consistently talked about running for president in the past.
According to USA Today, in 2015, he announced his bid for the White House at the MTV Video Music Awards.
He said at the time:
“It’s about ideas, bro. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth.”
“And, yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”
And in his 2016 album, The Life of Pablo, he also reiterated his plans to run for the presidency.
West rapped on the song Facts:
“2020, I’ mma run the whole election.”
However, West later said that he wouldn’t run until 2024.
In a radio interview with Power 92 Chicago’s DJ Pharris, he said:
“If I decide to do it, it will be done, I’m not going to try.”
“Yes, 100 percent it could happen… 2024.”
So what could we expect from West if he becomes president?
During a 2018 Power 92 interview with DJ Pharris, he promised that the medical industry would be strong under his reign.
“One of my main things [I’ll address] once I’m president is the medical industry.”
“I’m going to make sure that the medical industry flourishes. There’s one thing I learned by hanging around with Jay-Z, and being married to my wife, is you can’t f*** up the paper. That’s the problem with a lot of the radical leaders in the past.”
He also told Forbes that he wants to help the homeless by building low-income housing in California.
