According to Internet Movie Database, popularly known as IMDb, the latest Joker film has climbed the ranks, and it's now among the 10 greatest movies ever made.
Although the vote doesn't reflect critic opinions, like Rotten Tomatoes, the high ranking reveals how audiences have been enjoying Todd Philip's psychological thriller (a story about Arthur Fleck and how he transformed into a vengeful villain).
IMDb's top 10 movies list is usually filled with some heavy hitters in the box office. And many people would be surprised to see a latest-released comic book film, like Joker, among these titles in such a short time after its release.
The top-rated film in the list is The Shawshank Redemption, a pretty understandable pick for that position. The Godfather films take the second and third positions. The Dark Knight, formerly the only comic book movie to appear on IMDb's top 250 movies, takes the fourth rank.
Then, some widely beloved titles follow in—12 Angry Men and Schindler's List along with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Tarantino makes his appearance at position eight with Pulp Fiction. Then Joker comes in to surprise everyone, reading as the only entry on the list from this decade.
With an 8.8 out of 10, it's still surprising to see Joker up so high on the IMDb list. Perhaps it's an absolute testament to how thoroughly the movie has captured the cultural imagination of many fans.
However, the chances of Joker retaining its place among the likes of The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, and The Godfather are incredibly slim.
Because this has happened before with MCU films such as both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. These films appeared on IMDb's top 10 list during their immediate post-release window, but as months marched on, their ranking dropped.
The Joker film has already begun making waves. It's a dark and standalone look into Batman's archnemesis. It unveils the story of a man rejected by society, detailing what made him into a seemingly heartless man.
The Dark Knight, in which The Joker character was played by Heath Ledger, presented him as more of a multi-faceted personality than we had seen before. But this new Joker, depicted by Joaquin Phoenix, is so far-fetched next level.
In fact, the movie got a "huge eight-minute-long standing ovation" when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, as reported by Variety.
The film is already a hit. It recently beat Venom's domestic box office record for an October opening and raking $96m as opposed to the latter's $80.25m. According to Box Office Mojo, it has grossed over $248m worldwide.
Currently, it's sitting at around 68 percent certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site's critics' consensus labeling it "a chillingly plausible origin story that serves as a brilliant showcase for its star."
Another review on Empire Online said Joker's origin-story was 'bold, devastating and utterly beautiful.'
The review added:
"Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix have not just reimagined one of the most iconic villains in cinema history, but reimagined the comic book movie itself."
