Johnny Depp Verdict: Actor Wins Defamation Trial Against Amber Heard

Johnny Depp won his defamation case against Amber Heard, his ex-wife.

The jury awarded the actor $15 million in damages. NBC reported that he would receive 10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages in his defamation suit.

Amber was rewarded with $2 million in compensatory damages but $0 in punitive damages.

Johnny Depp won on all three accounts. The jury of 5 men and two women found that he was defamed by her the Washington Post op-ed from 2018.

The jurors made their decision on the third day of deliberations.

It is expected for Amber Heard's team to appeal, whether that will be about the cameras, some of the witnesses, or something else.

Depp left Virginia and had three concerts in Europe, leaving the jurors to make their decision. Last night, Kate Moss and Sharon Osbourne were present at his gig.

Heard was present in the courtroom as the verdict was read. Her statement to USA Today reads:

"The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I'm heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband."

"I'm even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously."

"I believe Johnny's attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK."

"I'm sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American — to speak freely and openly."

Depp's team released a statement:

This is a developing story.
