Different Names Of End of Bread

In the good ol' USA, we affectionately call the end of bread the 'heel.' It seems like this term hasn't quite made its journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Over in the United Kingdom, they've got a whole range of names for it, from 'knobby' to 'doorstep,' and even the straightforward 'crust.' This raises the question: which term is the right one? Well, the simple answer is they're all correct. Language keeps changing, so if one day folks start calling it the "me no likey piece," that'll be its name. But there are certainly some terms that are more popular than others.

An informal survey done on Reddit by someone who really loves bread asked people what they call the end part of a loaf. The most popular name turned out to be "heel," with 37% of the folks choosing that. The next most common term was simply "the end," which got 28% of the votes. "The butt" came in third at 20%, and lastly, "the crust" got 13%. In other parts of the USA, folks have their own names for it. There's a guy from Florida who calls it the "booty," but hey, it's always something unusual from Florida! The person who collected the results on Reddit mentioned that eight people from The Netherlands called it "Kontje," which one person said means "little butt," but Google claims it's a bit more explicit.
