You've probably heard of Ernest Hemingway. This man changed the way we write with his own books and words, he fought wars and taught us a lot. His stories have always been accessible and easy to understand to a wide audience.

He didn't believe in purple prose or complicated words. Hemingway believed in simplicity - and this is a lesson in itself.

His writing was so good that we now have a computer program in his name that tells you what you did wrong and what you did right.

But that's not all that Hemingway is. Most of all, he was a wise man, and his words moved many.

One of his most famous quotes is this one:

"There is no friend as loyal as a book."

Hemingway loved reading. And he taught so many people to love reading too, just through this quote. This one sparks joy in any book lover out there and you just know that he's right.

Books are always there for you, to take you into this other world where anything is possible.

While we're talking about hard times, here's another beautiful gem from The Old Man and the Sea, one of his best and most profound creations.

"But man is not made for defeat… A man can be destroyed but not defeated."

This one gently speaks of the power of human will and drive to persevere, even when all is lost. We are all like this, even if we don't know it. The world can crash and burn within us and around us, and yet that's when we often find more strength than ever to move forward.

If you are going through hard times right now, remember this. No one can defeat you. Nothing can defeat you.

But this doesn't mean that you don't get hurt. Of course, you do. We all do. Being hurt is a part of being human. However, the pain you went through is not a weakness, it's a strength.

Here's one of Hemingway's quotes from A Farewell to Arms that shows just that

"The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places."

Hemingway has a lot to say about being your best self, even if he doesn't say it explicitly. He believed that you must always strive to be better and that there's nobility in that:

"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self."

Here he speaks about something we all struggle with - comparing ourselves to others. We do it so often, but it hurts us and hurts people we are comparing ourselves to. What we need to understand is that the only person we should be comparing ourselves to is our former self.

You don't have to shut anyone else's light out to make yours shine brighter.

This is always important to remember, even when we feel safe - in relationships, for example.

We often get infatuated with our partner so much that we lose a sense of self. This is never a good thing.

Hemingway spoke so poignantly of this:

"The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too."

Don't lose yourself because you're with someone. Understand that you are special too.

And finally, who loves Hemingway more than writers. So, appropriately, here's a quote from Hemingway, for all writers out there:

"As a writer, you should not judge, you should understand."
