I’m Terrified Of Modern Relationships, And Here’s Why

I'm terrified, guys. Modern relationships scare the hell out of me. I don't think I can take it. I mean, how the hell are you supposed to move on with life without the only person you ever loved?

Seriously, I want to know. How do you do it?

I understand the struggle, especially now that you can see the one that got away or broke you on practically every screen you put before your eyes.

Yes, they remain with you forever. Even when you don't want them to.

You can block and unfriend or even erase the pictures and messages. But what about mutual friends? They will share stories and images of them. And there's not a damn thing you can do about it. Nothing at all.

And so, just like that, closure becomes an impossible feat for the modern dater.

I am not surprised that many people couldn't care less about closure.

Just when you think you are over them, a drunken text gets your attention. "I miss you."

You know the relationship was wrong. But you are lonely and vulnerable. Even after mustering superhuman strength, you cannot resist the urge to reply.

And it's downhill from there. You're back in the gutter.

That's the modern relationship scene for you, ladies and gentlemen.

We now have serious, open, casual, text-based, and almost relationships. And oh, before I forget, situationships.

No wonder people mumble for words when asked about their relationship status. Nobody knows what a relationship means anymore.

No labels. "Let's see where things go," seems to be the current relationship mantra.

It needn't be this hard. A few minutes of talking is all it takes to know where you stand with someone. But who bothers?

And also, when has cheating ever been this easy? This scares me.

Just download a dating app and a few swipes and messages later, you have someone to spend the night with.

You can do this on your phone during a bathroom break while your partner is mindlessly munching on their favorite snack while enjoying some silly show on television.

You can make plans, send pictures, and delete everything and your partner will be none the wiser.

And it's not always intentional. Sometimes you just find yourself in a situation that compromises your loyalty.

That's how people are losing their partners out of the blues. It catches even them by surprise.

People see what you are up to in your romantic life. Your profile pictures, the updates... they advertise your life to the world. And so is the breakup when it comes.

Everyone has an opinion about you and your love life.

Again, there is nothing you can do about it. That's how social media works.

That scares me.

There is one other thing - abandonment issues. Modern relationships can end abruptly and without warning.

One minute you are planning a romantic getaway together, and the next minute you are checking if they have answered your text. An hour earlier, you check again. You send another text. Nothing. A week later and after sending a couple of desperate texts, you realize that it's over.

Yes, just like that, someone you cared about vanishes from your life. That wound never heals properly because you don't know its genesis.

You can never tell if it was your fault of theirs. Sometimes you are not even sure if they are alive or not.

They call it ghosting, and it's all part of the scary thing we chalk up as modern dating. Seriously, I can't be the only one terrified by this, right. And I'm not paranoid.
