Self-care is so incredibly important. In today's world, it is so easy to get caught up in everyone else's situations and drama. It is so easy to get caught up in work, kids, and the day-to-day rush of things. Make sure you get time for yourself!

You are your best friend. You know yourself better than anyone else in the world. It is so important to make sure that you have everything you need to take care of yourself physically and mentally. Both physical and mental health is important and should never be neglected.

Here are 17 different ways to not only focus on yourself, but to take care of yourself.

1. Decide your future.

It is easier said than done but you are the boss of yourself. You can decide what you want to do in life. If you want to quit your job because it is a toxic or mentally draining environment, then do it! You need to be happy. If you want to be a stay-at-home mom, then do it! If you want to travel and work from your phone, do it! It is your choice!

2. Make a vision board.

These are actually a lot of fun. This allows you to put your goals into a picture so you can visualize them and see yourself accomplishing them. Cut out pictures of your dream job or house, vacations you want to attend, a car you want to buy, whatever! Hang this somewhere that you can see it always. This will be such a great motivation for yourself and will make you push harder to reach your goals.

3. Know your weaknesses and embrace them.

I know it sounds weird but your weaknesses are a good thing. They are a part of you! They are also a good reminder that no one is perfect. Everyone has weaknesses. Learning to live with them is going to make life better. You can even choose to work on improving them if you like. I am a terrible housekeeper so to make life easier I break my chores up into 15-minute blocks. The house gets clean, I don't feel overwhelmed. It is a win-win situation.

4. Exercise.

Please don't freak out when you read that. I don't necessarily mean like hardcore workouts. You could even just do light yoga or a brisk walk. The reason this is included is that when your body gets exercise, you gain more energy and your body feels much better. You get the blood moving and it is great for your heart!

5. Declutter.

If your living or workspace is cluttered it can have a pretty significant effect on your mental well-being. If you have not used something in the past six months, toss it or donate it. I usually get in this mental rut about twice a year, usually around spring and fall. It works out great because that is when I declutter and go through everything. When I am done my home is clean and my mind feels so much better.

6. Surround yourself with good people.

I really cannot stress this one enough. The company you keep is who you become or who influences your life. If you surround yourself with people who have been doing the same old same old, then you will most likely feel stuck. When you get a circle of friends who actually care about you, and have your best interest in mind it makes a world of difference. They will encourage you to do the right thing. They will encourage you to take time for yourself. They will cheer you on.

7. Keep a journal.

This is one of my favorite things to do. This is my space where I can release my thoughts and feelings and not get any judgment. It is a wonderful way to just let it go. There are no rules for journal keeping. Just write, doodle, scribble whatever your heart desires.

8. Eat healthy, yummy food.

When you eat good, nutritious food your body will thank you. You will be giving your body the energy it needs, and improve your health.

9. Try a new hobby.

It is always good to expand your horizons and learn new things. It is fun and exciting. You may even learn that you love it! A hobby could even turn into a career if you enjoy it that much.

10. Meditate.

This does not have to be strictly legs crossed, eyes closed saying, "OMM". This could be a nature walk, spending time with God in prayer. It could be anything as long as it calms you and centers you.

11. Sleep well.

Getting good sleep is just as important as what you eat and drink. It helps you stay in a better mood, you are more focused. You will be able to work more efficiently as well.

12. Eat that piece of chocolate.

Eating healthy, exercising, and drinking plenty of water is important. Did you know dark chocolate is good for you too? Who doesn't love chocolate? Go ahead and eat that piece!

13. Go get your hair done!

Is it just me or when you get your hair done, you come out feeling like a completely different person? Anytime I find myself feeling some type of way I usually go get my hair done. I either chop it or dye it. I always feel brand new and like I am on top of the world when I am done.

14. Vacation alone.

This is kind of weird because most of us vacation with others. But when you go alone you really get the chance to just relax and enjoy yourself. No itinerary to stick to, just you, a comfy bed, and an amazing view.

15. Read that book you have had your eye on.

For me, reading just transports me to another world. It gives me a way to escape. Book stores have a wonderful relaxing effect on me. Try it out.

16. Music soothes the soul.

Listening to music that I really enjoy just puts me in a great mood. I'll sing and dance and move around. Really feel the music and take it all in.

17. Talking to someone.

Whether it be a professional or a trusted friend, this is a great way to get your feelings out and get feedback as well. You don't have to be feeling any particular way, it is just great to have someone to talk to.

Make sure you take the time to really focus on yourself and take care of you. The rewards are great!
