Here's To The Friends Who Still Love Us, Despite The Distance

Not all friendships are meant to be regular brunches and coffee breaks. Life happens, but that doesn't mean a thing if you share the love.

Life has strange ways of taking us places and giving us tests for all relationships, romantic or friendly. Friends move away, or they get too much into their work. Some start families, and you don't get to see them as much as you used to. Time's not on your side, but technology is. And what's more important is that you still genuinely care for each other.

When we were in high school, we foolishly thought that this is what the rest of our youth will look like. We would gather and go to the movies, to parties, listen to music. Then colleges started tearing apart our group, but we were still going strong. E-mailing and Skyping became our favorite hang-out places. But, once you start adulting, it's hard to have it all.

Some of us drifted apart. No matter how tight your group of old friends is, there's always a chance that some will have to move on. Why? They need to adjust and accept different cities, countries, and merely talking to people from their hometown is painful. Eventually, they change.

But for the rest of us, the ones who stayed together, distance and family lives mean more Facetiming and traveling. We don't go bar hopping, nor we visit movies. We don't have time for it. You get used to not being together, yet being in each other's lives.

Friendships evolve, change, as do people. If you're continually growing together, you have your person. Maybe even the love of your life, soulmate, because not everything is about romantic love or sex. Your best friend can easily live miles away, and still, be the person that knows the real you the best. Luckily, we have all these social media apps as ways to always send photos, videos, and even drink coffee on opposite sides of the world.

Having a group of loving and supporting friends is priceless. It can be one person or ten; it's all the same. The important thing is that you have someone who gets you, grounds you, and pushes you forward. And it's not like you don't do the same for them. Everything is effortless because you have this unbreakable bond, love, and mutual respect.

Friends are the family you choose. Even better, they are the ones you don't have to love, yet you do. These people can come into your life at any age, and none of it matters, nor it has to make sense. The most important thing is that you can rely on them for no BS advice, cry to them when things get hard or laugh at your inside jokes.

There's nothing new about keeping friendships alive despite the distance. People used to write letters and waited for months to get an answer. All I have to do is send a simple "Hi," and my friends are here, with me. These people keep me safe and sane, and no, I don't get the idea that they live all over the world. Apart from checking time zones occasionally, I appreciate that I found them.

So, wherever your friends are, whatever it is they are doing, send them a message. Tell them you love them. We have these fantastic people, and we often overlook the fact that they deserve to hear just how much they mean to us.

You may be alone, but you're not lonely, which is all that counts. Until the scientists come up with teleportation, we will use technology, for video calls, ugly cries, breakups, baby's first words… Despite what the song says, love won't tear us apart. It's giving us the strength to nail the adulting thing. Call your friends, give them a virtual hug, ask about their day. Because that small gesture might make everything better, at least for a few minutes.

So, here's to all of our precious, fabulous friends, near or far! The distance means nothing when we have each other!
