Hereditary, The Greatest Horror Film Of The Past 20 Years, Is Now Streaming On Netflix

Whether your Netflix subscription is borrowed or paid (we don’t judge here) it’s about to come in really handy. That’s because Hereditary, one of the most disturbing yet immensely entertaining horror movies ever made, is now available for you to watch on Netflix.

The movie follows the Graham family, which was haunted by supernatural forces after the death of their grandmother.

Her daughter Annie (Toni Collette), her stoner grandson, Peter (Alex Wolff), and her unusually reserved granddaughter, Charlie (Millie Shapiro), begin to discover some extremely chilling, eerie secrets about their family’s past.

And once they start unraveling some of the deep, dark secrets of their family, things only get creepier. As the Grahams let their loss sink in, it becomes clear that there’s more to know about their family’s history than they ever would’ve expected.

Hereditary was described as “the singularly most terrifying horror film in years” as well as “this generation’s The Exorcist“.

In addition to being a truly dark masterpiece of cinema, Hereditary seems to have pretty complicated events that might take you a couple of watches to be able to get your head around it (only if you can handle it).

Clearly, the film’s effects don’t seem to wear off, and it doesn’t lose its chilling touch. Twitter users who streamed the movie this week are all still shaken in fear.

“20 minutes into watching hereditary on Netflix and my heart has stopped twice,” tweeted one terrified viewer.

“Hereditary is finally on Netflix u know damn well I’m gonna make my family watch it so they can all have nightmares,” wrote another horror movie fan.

Ari Aster, the director of this dark work, told  Vox “I knew that I really wanted to make a film about the corrosive effects of trauma on a family unit”

“I knew that I wanted to make a film… about a family that’s basically eating itself in its grief. It’s a story that I certainly had in me. I didn’t really have to find it.”

“Ultimately, I did want to make a film that was seriously tackling these issues and operating almost as a meditation on these things, while at the same time functioning as an exciting genre film that hopefully delivers.” He added.

This wasn’t Aster’s first great piece of dark cinema. He’s also worked on the great title, Midsommar, which came out last year.

It’s the story of a couple and their two friends where they travel to Sweden in an isolated, rural community just to see a festival in the middle of the summer solstice.

Aster recently revealed that Hereditary isn’t the only disturbing work he’s got in his head and that there’s more where it came from.

Earlier this year, Aster told UC Santa Barbara’s Associated Students Program Board that he intends to make a four-hour “zonky nightmare comedy”.

Though “for now” there’s no indication when he will start filming the project or even when it will be allowed to. The script and the cast are also not known, yet.

Hereditary is now seen as one of the greatest horror films of the generation, which really has further secured Aster’s position as one of the greats.

So, with all this in mind, would you dare watch Hereditary tonight?
