To elevate the glory of the African Continent, a Twitter account called ''Igbo Excellence', decided to showcase some of the best African architecture, and interestingly, the post took the internet by storm as millions appreciated these overlooked gems.

Baroque, Gothic, Byzantine, and Modernist, among others! We're all familiar with these iconic Western Architectures, mainly because they are globally celebrated.

The Ottoman-style mosques and the pagodas of East Asia are also recognized as temples of the pre-colonial civilizations, and they tend to flourish in Central and South America.

Unfortunately, aside from the Pyramid of Gaza and a few iconic landmarks, many rich assorted diversity and cultures of the African continent is, to a great extent, overlooked in the worldwide media.

And most reports from the mainland concentrate only on issues that strengthen negative generalizations—those of sickness, neediness, and war.

There's much to appreciate about pre-colonial Africa, which is barely mentioned outside of history books.

More than 10,000 states and autonomous communities with distinct languages and customs existed. Many advanced kingdoms and empires (such as the Asante Union, the Mossi Kingdom, and the Zulu Kingdom) still thrived before colonization by the developed nations.

A Twitter account called Igbo Excellence decided it's time to show the world some of the best African architectures that have often been overlooked.

Starting with Nubian, Igbo Excellence shared examples from different areas and eras of African history, reminding us of the long, varied histories of peoples across this vast continent.

The mud mosques of the Sahel, such as the magnificent Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali, are particularly impressive, and the community of Djenné takes an active role in maintaining the mosques via a unique annual fiesta.

This festival includes music and food, but the primary objective is to repair the damage (erosion) caused by annual rains on the mosque in the past year. The community also seals the cracks caused by changes in temperature and humidity.

As you can see, there's plenty to admire in the diverse and unique styles of architecture from all across the continent.

The original Igbo Excellence post has so far attracted over more than 600k likes and retweets as people discover and rediscover this rich cultural heritage.

People added their own examples as well, giving us a newfound appreciation for the wonder of African architecture.
